Also, many common phrasal verbs are very similar (take up, take on, take in, take over, etc.) and a number of them have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/english-phrasal-verbs-with-multiple-meanings\/\">multiple meanings.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Native English speakers use phrasal verbs very often in spoken English! We can use them in written English, too &#8211; in more informal writing. it&#8217;s really great!<br \/>\n<em>(check out = look at, go to)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a name=\"separable\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Separable &amp; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>INCORRECT<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Here&#8217;s an example with a person:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>They&#8217;ll <strong>pick up <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">John<\/span><\/strong> from the airport.<\/li>\n<li>= They&#8217;ll <strong>pick <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">John<\/span> up<\/strong> from the airport.<\/li>\n<li>= They&#8217;ll <strong>pick <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">him<\/span> up<\/strong> from the airport.<\/li>\n<li>They&#8217;ll <strong>pick up <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">him<\/span><\/strong> from the airport. &#8211;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong> INCORRECT<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3>Review<\/h3>\n<p>We\u2019ve learned about:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Intransitive phrasal verbs, which have no direct object, like <strong>wake up<\/strong>: I woke up at 6:00.<\/li>\n<li>Transitive phrasal verbs, which do have a direct object: I <strong>took off<\/strong> my hat.<\/li>\n<li>Separable phrasal verbs, which can have the direct object or the pronoun in the middle: I <strong>took<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">my hat<\/span> <strong>off<\/strong> \/ I <strong>took<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">it<\/span> <strong>off<\/strong>. If we use a pronoun like me, you, him, her, us, them, or it, then it MUST go in the middle and not at the end.<\/li>\n<li>Inseparable phrasal verbs, which must have the direct object at the end, and not in the middle: They\u2019re <strong>looking after<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">our children.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">How do you know if a phrasal verb is transitive or intransitive, and separable or inseparable?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, there&#8217;s no &#8220;rule&#8221; for looking at a phrasal verb and knowing what type it is! <\/span><span style=\"color: #000080;\">even if you&#8217;ve studied for a long time.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>I had a student who was at the upper-intermediate level, and his English was really quite good. How are you supposed to remember each one?<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"alert\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">How do native English speakers<br \/>\nlearn phrasal verbs?<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Let&#8217;s look at how native English speakers learn them &#8211; here&#8217;s a very simple example.<\/p>\n<p>Imagine that every morning when I was a child, my mother said to me, <strong>&#8220;Shayna, time to get up!&#8221;<\/strong> &#8211; then I learn from the situation that &#8220;get up&#8221; means &#8220;leave the bed in the morning,&#8221; and I will naturally use it in this way when I speak.
