You can use those to talk about the future in specific cases)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today I\u2019ll explain which future tense to use in which situation &#8211; and I\u2019ll ask you to practice with me, so get ready. It&#8217;s when you <strong>want <\/strong>to do something, but you have not yet taken any definite action.<\/p>\n<p>You can use <strong>going to <\/strong>or other <a title=\"English Phrases for New Year\u2019s Resolutions\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/english-phrases-for-new-years-resolutions\/\">phrases for New Year&#8217;s resolutions<\/a> (I hope to, I&#8217;d like to, I&#8217;m planning to, I might, I&#8217;m thinking of):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I&#8217;m going to join a gym.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m going to read more books.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m going to get out of debt this year.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m going to start doing some volunteer work.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Use it now!<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Write or say 1 thing you are going to do and 1 things you are NOT going to do this year.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">#3 &#8211; For Plans and Arrangements, you can use 3 verb tenses:<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;Plans and arrangements&#8221; means you have already taken some definite action to <strong>make this plan a reality<\/strong> in the future.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>I&#8217;m meeting<\/strong> with Barbara tomorrow.<\/li>\n<li><strong>I&#8217;m going to meet<\/strong> with Barbara tomorrow.<\/li>\n<li><strong>I&#8217;ll be meeting<\/strong> with Barbara tomorrow.<br \/>\n<em>(Barbara and I have scheduled a time to meet, so the meeting will definitely happen)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-23337\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/meet-552410_640-300x197.jpg\" alt=\"future tenses for plans and arrangements\" width=\"300\" height=\"197\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/meet-552410_640-300x197.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/meet-552410_640.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As you can see from the example above, there are <strong>3 verb tenses <\/strong>that are commonly used:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Going to:<\/strong> We&#8217;re going to visit him next week.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Present Continuous:<\/strong> We&#8217;re visiting him next week.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Future Continuous:<\/strong> We&#8217;ll be visiting him next week.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When talking about plans and arrangements, these tenses are essentially the same. However, when using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/present-continuous-for-future-arrangements\/\">present continuous for future use<\/a>, we usually include the specific time in the future (to avoid confusion with &#8220;actions happening at the moment&#8221;):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>I&#8217;m taking an intensive English course.<\/strong><br \/>\n(right now, at this moment; the course is currently in progress)<\/p>\n<p><strong>I&#8217;m taking an intensive English course next month.<\/strong><br \/>\n(in the future)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4><strong>Use it now!<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Write or say 3 sentences about plans or arrangements you have for the upcoming months.<\/p>\n<div class=\"alert\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/espressoenglish.lpages.co\/free-pdf-different-future-tenses\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-23339\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/future-tenses-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/future-tenses-1.png 1000w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/future-tenses-1-300x215.png 300w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/future-tenses-1-768x549.png 768w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/future-tenses-1-211x150.png 211w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a class=\"elementor-button rounded large green\" href=\"https:\/\/espressoenglish.lpages.co\/free-pdf-different-future-tenses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Download free lesson PDF<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">#4 &#8211; For Decisions in the Moment, Promises, and Offers, use WILL:<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>One of the most common decisions made in the moment is <strong>when ordering at a restaurant<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Ordering at a restaurant:<br \/>\n<\/em><strong>I&#8217;ll have<\/strong> the salmon with a side order of vegetables.<br \/>\n<strong>I&#8217;ll have<\/strong> the chicken salad.<br \/>\n<strong>I&#8217;ll have<\/strong> a slice of apple pie with ice cream.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-23336\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/bar-1238779_640-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"future tenses for ordering at a restaurant\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/bar-1238779_640-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/bar-1238779_640.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Also use WILL when you are offering to help someone, or making a promise:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>I&#8217;ll<\/strong> help you with your homework.<br \/>\n= I am offering to help you with your homework.<\/li>\n<li><strong>We&#8217;ll<\/strong> give you a ride to the train station.<br \/>\n= We are offering to take you to the train station.<\/li>\n<li><strong>I&#8217;ll<\/strong> call you at 5:00.<br \/>\n= I promise to call you at 5:00.<\/li>\n<li><strong>I&#8217;ll<\/strong> always love you.<br \/>\n= I promise to love you forever.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Use it now!<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Imagine that your best friend is very sick and can&#8217;t leave the house. Write or say one thing that you can do to help her. (&#8220;I&#8217;ll cook you dinner&#8230;&#8221; &#8220;I&#8217;ll pick up your kids from school&#8230;&#8221; etc.)<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">#5 &#8211; For Scheduled Events, use the PRESENT SIMPLE:<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;Scheduled events&#8221; are things like:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Transportation schedules (flights, trains, etc.)<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Our flight <strong>leaves <\/strong>at 8:00.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Conferences and events (meetings, lectures, classes)<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>The conference <strong>starts <\/strong>next Thursday.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Things that operate on a regular schedule (bank or store opening \/ closing)<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>The supermarket <strong>closes<\/strong> in 15 minutes.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>These are different from &#8220;plans and arrangements&#8221; because in general, they are things we have no control over.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-19556\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/plane-841441_640-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"present simple for future scheduled events\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/plane-841441_640-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/plane-841441_640.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">#6 &#8211; For actions that will be completed before a specific time in the future, use the FUTURE PERFECT:<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Here&#8217;s an example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Imagine that right now it is 12:00 PM.<\/li>\n<li>I will leave work at 5:00 PM.<\/li>\n<li>Before I leave work, I am definitely going finish a project.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So I can say: <strong>&#8220;By 5:00 PM, I <span style=\"color: #000080;\">will have finished<\/span> the project.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Or: <strong>&#8220;By the time I leave work, I <span style=\"color: #000080;\">will have finished<\/span> the project.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-23333\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/by5pm.png\" alt=\"future perfect tense\" width=\"591\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/by5pm.png 762w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/by5pm-300x169.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 591px) 100vw, 591px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The future perfect is typically used with <strong>by <\/strong>and <strong>by the time.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some people call the future perfect tense &#8220;the future in the past&#8221; because I am imagining being at a future point (5:00 PM) looking back on an action that was completed in the past.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Use it now!<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>What&#8217;s one thing you will have done by this date next year?<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;By this time next year, I <strong>will have written<\/strong> a book,&#8221; for example.<\/p>\n<h3>Review: Future Tenses in English<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Predictions:<\/strong> will\/won\u2019t or going to<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Intentions:<\/strong> going to<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Plans\/arrangements<\/strong>: going to, future continuous, present continuous<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Decisions in the moment, promises, offers:<\/strong> will<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Scheduled events:<\/strong> present simple<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Things that will be completed before a future time:<\/strong> future perfect<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let me know if you have any questions about future tenses in English, and make sure to <a href=\"https:\/\/espressoenglish.lpages.co\/free-pdf-different-future-tenses\/\">download the free PDF guide<\/a> to this lesson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019d also love to help you even more inside my <a href=\"https:\/\/espressoenglish.lpages.co\/advanced-english-grammar-course\/\"><strong>Advanced English Grammar Course<\/strong><\/a>, where we go in detail into lots of important grammar topics.
