A <strong>traffic jam<\/strong> is when the traffic is stopped or slow.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">#4 &#8211; You don&#8217;t want to be in this lane &#8211; it&#8217;s exit-only.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Most roads and highways are divided into <strong>lanes<\/strong> &#8211; for example, the road in the photo above has two lanes. An <strong>exit<\/strong> is a road to leave the highway, to get off the highway. If a lane is <strong>exit-only<\/strong>, it means that the cars in that lane must leave the highway.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">#5 &#8211; Pull over &#8211; I think the car is overheating.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>This phrasal verb means to drive your car to the side of the road and stop. The side of the road is sometimes called the <strong>shoulder<\/strong>. You usually pull over if you think there is a problem with the car &#8211; such as in this case, when the car is <strong>overheating <\/strong>&#8211; that means the engine is getting too hot.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">#6 &#8211; Did you see how that truck just cut me off?!?<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If another vehicle <strong>cuts you off,<\/strong> it suddenly drives in front of your car. It is a dangerous movement because it can cause an accident.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">#7 &#8211; I&#8217;m thirsty &#8211; let&#8217;s make a pit stop at the next service station.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>When you are taking a <strong>road trip <\/strong>(a long trip by car), you&#8217;ll occasionally need to make a <strong>pit stop <\/strong>&#8211; that means to stop at a store or station to use the bathroom and\/or buy food and drinks.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">#8 &#8211; Turn left at the light and then follow the signs for the airport.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The red, yellow, and green lights that control traffic are called <strong>traffic lights. <\/strong>However, when giving directions, some people simply say &#8220;at the light.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Information and directions are posted along the road on <strong>signs:<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">#9 &#8211; I slammed on the brakes when I saw a child run in front of the car.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The word <strong>brakes <\/strong>refers to the equipment that makes the car stop. We can say &#8220;hit the brakes&#8221; to describe using this equipment to stop the car, but the verb to <strong>&#8220;slam&#8221; <\/strong>on the brakes means to stop the car suddenly, in the case of an emergency.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">#10 &#8211; Slow down &#8211; the speed limit is 55.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>There are two phrasal verbs we use to describe change in the car&#8217;s velocity &#8211; <strong>slow down <\/strong>to drive the car slower, and <strong>speed up <\/strong>to drive the car faster. <strong>Speed <\/strong>is another word for &#8220;velocity,&#8221; and most roads have a <strong>speed limit <\/strong>&#8211; the maximum velocity at which you can drive your car.<\/p>\n<div class=\"alert\">\n<p align=\"center\"><a class=\"elementor-button\" href=\"https:\/\/espressoenglish.lpages.co\/free-pdf-20-driving-expressions\/\">Download Lesson PDF<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">#11 &#8211; You forgot to turn off your blinker after you merged.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The yellow or orange lights on the sides of the car that indicate a left or right turn are called <strong>turn signals <\/strong>or <strong>blinkers.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You need to activate your <strong>blinker <\/strong>to inform other drivers that you plan to turn left, turn right, or to <strong>merge <\/strong>&#8211; that means to move from one lane to another.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">#12 &#8211; I wish you&#8217;d stop being a backseat driver!<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>A <strong>backseat driver <\/strong>is a person in the car who is not driving, but who criticizes the driver&#8217;s abilities or who makes lots of suggestions and gives lots of tips for the driver to improve. Most people think that backseat drivers are really annoying!<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">#13 &#8211; You can make a U-turn at the next intersection.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An <strong>intersection<\/strong> is a place where two roads meet or cross, and a<strong> U-turn<\/strong> is when you turn the car around and go back in the opposite direction.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">#14 &#8211; This road is closed; there\u2019s a detour.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <strong>detour<\/strong> is when you have to take a different route to avoid some obstacle &#8211; in this case, a closed road. There are usually signs pointing you in the right direction.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">#15 &#8211; You can drop me off right here at the corner.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To <strong>drop someone off<\/strong> means to stop the car and let the person get out. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The opposite is to <strong>pick someone up<\/strong> &#8211; to let the person get into your car.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">#16 &#8211; My car wouldn\u2019t start this morning; I had to get a jump from my neighbor.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saying a <strong>car wouldn\u2019t start<\/strong> means that the engine wouldn\u2019t turn on. This can happen when the car\u2019s battery is dead. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To <strong>get a jump<\/strong> is to connect cables from another car\u2019s battery to your car\u2019s battery, to give it the power to start.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">#17 &#8211; I ran over some broken glass and got a flat tire.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We use the phrasal verb <strong>run over<\/strong> when a car passes over something on the ground &#8211; in this case, broken glass. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The result? It made a hole in the tire which let the air out, resulting in a <strong>flat tire<\/strong>. You\u2019ll need to change the tire and put on the <strong>spare tire<\/strong> (the extra tire usually kept in the trunk for emergencies like this).<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">#18 &#8211; That guy just ran a red light!<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To <strong>run a red light<\/strong> or <strong>run a stop sign<\/strong> means to drive through it without stopping like you\u2019re supposed to. Obviously, this can cause an accident.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">#19 &#8211; There\u2019s a spot over there, but you\u2019ll need to parallel park.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A place to park the car is called a<strong> \u201cparking spot\u201d<\/strong> or just <strong>\u201cspot\u201d<\/strong> for short. <strong>Parallel parking<\/strong> is when you need to maneuver the car into a spot on the side of the road. Many people find this a little tricky!<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">#20 &#8211; Hop in &#8211; let\u2019s hit the road!<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u201cHop in\u201d<\/strong> is an informal way to invite someone into your car &#8211; and saying <strong>\u201clet\u2019s hit the road\u201d<\/strong> means \u201clet\u2019s start traveling by car.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I hope you\u2019ve enjoyed our road trip through these driving phrases used by native English speakers!
