In this lesson, you\u2019ll learn 15 super useful phrasal verbs, so you can talk about exercise, healthy habits, and even those not-so-healthy moments!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure to <a href=\"https:\/\/espressoenglish.lpages.co\/free-pdf-phrasal-verbs-for-health-fitness\/\">download today\u2019s lesson PDF<\/a> so you can review all the phrasal verbs and try the quiz to test yourself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All right, let\u2019s start with some phrasal verbs related to sports and fitness &#8211; I\u2019ll teach you each one in context, in a sentence that we might really say.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Fitness Phrasal Verbs<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><strong>&#8220;I like to <span style=\"color: #800000;\">work out<\/span> in the early morning, because that&#8217;s when I have the most energy.&#8221;<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Work out<\/strong> means exercise. It can also be used as a noun (one word): &#8220;That was a great workout! I&#8217;m gonna be sore tomorrow!&#8221; (sore = your muscles are hurting)<\/p>\n<h4><strong>&#8220;Time to go to the gym &#8211; I need to <span style=\"color: #800000;\">work off<\/span> the cheesecake I had last night!&#8221;<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Work off<\/strong> is a special phrasal verb used to describe doing exercise to lose the weight or extra calories you gained by eating food.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>&#8220;Let&#8217;s <span style=\"color: #800000;\">warm up<\/span> with a short run.&#8221;<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>To <strong>warm up<\/strong> is to do light or easy exercise in preparation for more intense exercise later. It&#8217;s important to warm up in order to avoid sports injuries.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>&#8220;My daughter is going to <span style=\"color: #800000;\">try out for<\/span> the school&#8217;s most competitive soccer team.&#8221;<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>When you want to join a sports team, but the team doesn&#8217;t accept everybody, then you need to <strong>try out for<\/strong> the team &#8211; this means demonstrate your abilities so that the team&#8217;s manager can evaluate you and decide if you are good enough to join the team.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>&#8220;The football player <span style=\"color: #800000;\">passed out<\/span> due to dehydration.&#8221;<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>To <strong>pass out<\/strong> is to lose consciousness (you can also say<strong> &#8220;black out&#8221;<\/strong>). When a person who has passed out begins to wake up, you can use another phrasal verb: <strong>&#8220;I think he&#8217;s coming around.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4><strong>&#8220;The boxer threw a single punch and immediately <span style=\"color: #800000;\">knocked out<\/span> his opponent.&#8221;<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Differently from &#8220;pass out,&#8221; which happens naturally, <strong>knock out<\/strong> means to hit somebody and make them lose consciousness.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>&#8220;He didn&#8217;t finish the marathon &#8211; he <span style=\"color: #800000;\">gave up<\/span> around the 20th mile.&#8221;<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>To <strong>&#8220;give up&#8221;<\/strong> is to stop doing something, to desist.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t give up when it comes to learning English! The opposite of a stuffed up nose is a runny nose &#8211; when your nose is dripping liquid mucus.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>&#8220;I feel a little queasy &#8211; I think I&#8217;m gonna <span style=\"color: #800000;\">throw up<\/span>.&#8221;<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Throw up<\/strong> means to vomit. The word &#8220;queasy&#8221; is another way to say nauseous, when your stomach is agitated.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>&#8220;My ankle <span style=\"color: #800000;\">swelled up<\/span> like a balloon when I sprained it.&#8221;<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>If a part of your body<strong> &#8220;swells up,&#8221;<\/strong> it means it gets bigger than normal because of fluid accumulating under the skin. Swelling indicates an injury or another health problem. The expression &#8220;like a balloon&#8221; emphasizes the extent of the swelling, and the verb &#8220;sprain&#8221; refers to an injury of the tendons or ligaments &#8211; the connections between your muscles and bones. Another way to say this is &#8220;my [body part] is swollen.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>&#8220;I&#8217;m overweight; the doctor says I need to <span style=\"color: #800000;\">cut down on<\/span> fried foods.&#8221;<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The phrasal verbs<strong> &#8220;cut down on&#8221;<\/strong> and <strong>&#8220;cut back on&#8221;<\/strong> mean &#8220;to reduce.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>&#8220;Don&#8217;t get too close to me &#8211; I think I&#8217;m <span style=\"color: #800000;\">coming down with<\/span> a cold.&#8221;<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>If you are<strong> &#8220;coming down with&#8221;<\/strong> a disease, it means you&#8217;re starting to get sick. This phrasal verb is usually used with either a cold or the flu.<\/p>\n<p>If you are recovering from a disease, you are <strong>&#8220;getting over&#8221;<\/strong> it: &#8220;I&#8217;ll be back at work tomorrow; I&#8217;ve finally gotten over the stomach virus I had.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>&#8220;You&#8217;ll need a prescription-strength ointment to<span style=\"color: #800000;\"> get rid of<\/span> that rash.&#8221;<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>To<strong> &#8220;get rid of&#8221;<\/strong> something is to eliminate it.<\/p>\n<p>A <strong>rash<\/strong> is an unusual colored area on your skin, which can be caused by allergy, disease, or infection; an <strong>ointment<\/strong> is a medicated cream or lotion that helps your skin heal. If a medication is<strong> &#8220;prescription-strength,&#8221;<\/strong> that means it is so strong that you need a doctor&#8217;s written permission to buy it.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>&#8220;She&#8217;s in critical condition, but the doctors say she&#8217;ll <span style=\"color: #800000;\">pull through<\/span>.&#8221;<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The phrasal verb <strong>&#8220;pull through,&#8221;<\/strong> when used in the context of an injury or illness, means the person will survive; the person will continue living and will not die. This is usually used in relation to recovering from very serious, life-threatening health problems.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>&#8220;Peter&#8217;s father <span style=\"color: #800000;\">passed away<\/span> last night.
