And you?&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Yeah.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the conversation stops here because there&#8217;s no natural way to continue it. This is OK if you only want to have a quick conversation &#8211; for example, if you are quickly passing a co-worker in the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>But how can you have a longer conversation in English? <span class=\"ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">Let\u2019s look at 3 points that will help you keep a conversation going, and then we\u2019ll see them in practice, in two example conversations.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">How to keep a conversation going: 3 keys<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Ask questions that start with <strong>Who, What, When, Where, Why, <\/strong>and<strong> How.<\/strong> Try to avoid yes\/no questions.<\/li>\n<li>In each of your answers, <strong>give one or two details <\/strong>that will help continue the conversation. You don&#8217;t need to talk for a long time.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Talk about these topics:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Family<\/li>\n<li>Interests\/Hobbies<\/li>\n<li>Sports<\/li>\n<li>TV, movies, and popular culture<\/li>\n<li>Music<\/li>\n<li>Current events<\/li>\n<li>Interesting places in the city<\/li>\n<li>Travel<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Unless the other person is a very good friend of yours, <strong>avoid topics<\/strong> like politics, religion, sex life, health problems, and personal finances.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Example English Conversations<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Here are two example conversations &#8211; notice how each person adds one or two details, and then there is a follow-up question about the details to keep the conversation going.<\/p>\n<h4><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Conversation 1:<\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h4>\n<div style=\"height: 40px!important;\">\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-5578-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/contconvo1.mp3?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/contconvo1.mp3\">https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/contconvo1.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;Hey, how was your weekend?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;Pretty good! I went to a baseball game with my brother.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;Really? Who was playing?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;The Yankees and the Red Sox. We&#8217;re huge Yankees fans!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;Yeah? How was the game?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;Very exciting &#8211; it was tied until the last inning, when we won 2-1.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;Haha, that&#8217;s great! I can&#8217;t say I&#8217;m a baseball fan, myself &#8211; I prefer basketball.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;Basketball, huh? Playing or watching?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;Both &#8211; I&#8217;ve played basketball since I was a kid.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;No kidding! You must be really good.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;Well, I just play for fun. It&#8217;s a great workout.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;I bet. I could use more exercise myself, but I don&#8217;t think I&#8217;m cut out for basketball. I was thinking of joining a martial arts class&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;That sounds interesting! I can&#8217;t wait for the summer &#8211; we&#8217;re taking a big family vacation in June.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;Oh? Where are you going?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;We&#8217;re going to Colorado for a month of hiking and camping. Have you ever been there?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;Yes, I&#8217;ve actually been to Denver twice on business trips&#8230; but they didn&#8217;t involve any hiking!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;Haha. How about you &#8211; any special plans for the summer?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;No, not really. I&#8217;ll probably take a few weekend trips to visit friends, but I&#8217;m saving up my vacation time for December, when I&#8217;m going to Costa Rica.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;Wow! Why Costa Rica?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;Well, my best friend from college lives there now &#8211; she owns a hotel, and she invited me to spend a couple of weeks there to escape the cold winter weather.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;How wonderful! Do you speak any Spanish?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;Barely any &#8211; only what I remember from classes in high school&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">I think some English learners can be a little afraid of having conversations because they\u2019re afraid they\u2019ll have to speak for a long time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">But as you can see from these examples, each person just says one or two sentences, and then it\u2019s the other person\u2019s turn to speak. It\u2019s a balanced interaction &#8211; a conversation involves taking turns, not just one person talking on and on for a long time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">So don\u2019t be scared to have conversations in English! I know you can do it, and remembering the tips from this video will really help you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"ac-designer-copy\"><span class=\"ac-designer-marked-selection ac-designer-copy\">Of course, it\u2019s even easier to have conversations when you know lots of phrases to express yourself!
