Learn these phrases and expressions as well as the situations in which you can use each one.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">I&#8217;ll say.<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>You can say <strong>&#8220;I&#8217;ll say&#8221; <\/strong>to show that you strongly agree with what the other person says. We often use &#8220;I&#8217;ll say&#8221; to imply that what the other person said was an understatement, and that the truth is even &#8220;stronger&#8221; than their statement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Situation: <\/strong>You and your friend see this:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-17764 size-medium\" title=\"everyday-english-phrases-big-fish\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/big-fish797987_640-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/big-fish797987_640-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/big-fish797987_640.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Your friend: <\/strong>&#8220;Wow &#8211; that&#8217;s a big fish.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>You: <\/strong>&#8220;I&#8217;ll say!&#8221; (implies that the fish is not just big&#8230; the fish is GIGANTIC)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Fat chance!<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;Fat chance!&#8221; means that there is a very little possibility of something happening. The possibility is so small that you think it won&#8217;t happen. <strong>Note: <\/strong>This expression is rather sarcastic. You should only use it with very good friends, never in a professional situation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Situation: <\/strong>You and your friend are talking about the baseball championships.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Your friend: <\/strong>The Red Sox are going all the way this year.<br \/>\n<em>(&#8220;going all the way&#8221; = going to win the championship)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>You: <\/strong>Fat chance! They&#8217;ll never beat the Yankees!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A more formal and polite way to express a small probability is &#8220;I don&#8217;t think that&#8217;s very likely.&#8221;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">I rest my case.<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>You can say this when you are expressing a fact or opinion, and then something happens to prove your point perfectly and show that you are completely correct.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Situation: <\/strong>You and your friend are talking about cooking.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-17765 size-medium\" title=\"everyday-english-expressions-i-rest-my-case\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/ramen-noodles-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/ramen-noodles-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/ramen-noodles.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>You: <\/strong>You can&#8217;t cook at all.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Your friend: <\/strong>I can cook! I always make those instant noodle soups.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You: <\/strong>I rest my case.<br \/>\n<em>(the fact that instant noodle soups are meals for people who don&#8217;t really know how to cook, shows that your first statement about your friend&#8217;s lack of cooking abilities was correct) <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">What&#8217;s the catch?<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>You can say this when something sounds too good to be true. It means that you suspect that there is a hidden problem, which might make the opportunity not as good as it appears to be.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Situation: <\/strong>You and your friend are talking about working from home.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Your friend: <\/strong>I just found out about a great opportunity &#8211; I can work from home only 5 hours a week and I&#8217;ll earn at least $2000 a month, guaranteed!<\/p>\n<p><strong>You: <\/strong>Hmm&#8230; what&#8217;s the catch?<br \/>\n<em>(you think that there is some problem or lie about this opportunity)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Good call.<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>When you respond to a statement with &#8220;good call,&#8221; you are saying that the other person made a good decision or a smart observation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Situation: <\/strong>You and your friend are trying to decide whether to go to the mall or to the movies.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Your friend: <\/strong>Let&#8217;s go to the mall &#8211; they&#8217;re having a big sale this weekend. We can go to the movies anytime.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You: <\/strong>Good call.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Take your pick.<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>You can say &#8220;take your pick&#8221; when you are offering the other person items for them to make a choice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Situation: <\/strong>You are going to make tea for your friend, and you have several different flavors. Please come on in &#8211; make yourselves at home.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Your colleague:<\/strong> Thank you!
