It can be used for receiving things, for emotions, for changes, for relationships, for travel, and lots more.<\/p>\n<p>Today you\u2019ll learn 50 common English collocations with \u201cget\u201d \u2014 these are used often native English speakers. I\u2019ve organized them by category, so they\u2019re easier to remember and use in your own English. I could say \u201cI <strong>got tickets<\/strong> to the concert\u201d meaning I bought them. <strong>Get a computer, get new shoes, get something for a good price<\/strong> &#8211; all things we buy.<\/p>\n<p>We also say <strong>get a job<\/strong> &#8211; She got a job at a hospital &#8211; a job is not something you buy, but it\u2019s something you achieve, you didn\u2019t have it before, and now you have it. We can also <strong>get an answer<\/strong> or <strong>get a response<\/strong> to a question we\u2019ve asked or message we\u2019ve sent.<\/p>\n<p>In school, we <strong>get grades,<\/strong> we can <strong>get feedback<\/strong> and <strong>get support<\/strong> from the teacher. You might <strong>get an award, get a prize, or get a certification<\/strong>. After finishing some Espresso English courses, you can <strong>get a digital certificate!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We say <strong>get an opportunity<\/strong> or <strong>get a chance<\/strong> to do something. My kids always <strong>get to school<\/strong> on time (meaning they arrive at school on time).<\/p>\n<p>We can talk about <strong>getting to work<\/strong> or <strong>getting to the office<\/strong>, <strong>getting to bed<\/strong> (which is the same as going to bed), <strong>getting to the airport<\/strong> in time for your flight, and <strong>getting to London<\/strong> when you are traveling there, arriving there.<\/p>\n<p>In all those examples I said \u201cget to\u201d + the place, but there are two words where we never use \u201cto,\u201d and that is \u201c<strong>get home<\/strong>\u201d and \u201c<strong>get there<\/strong>\u201d &#8211; I usually <strong>get home<\/strong> from work by 6. What time will we <strong>get there<\/strong>? No need for \u201cto\u201d<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"144\"><strong>COLLOCATION<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"480\"><strong>EXAMPLE SENTENCE<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"144\"><strong>get to school<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"480\">The bus was stuck in traffic and we got to school late.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"144\"><strong>get to work \/ get to the office<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"480\">Can you get to the office a little earlier tomorrow?<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"144\"><strong>get to bed<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"480\">I try to get to bed before midnight.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"144\"><strong>get to the airport<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"480\">We got to the airport three hours before our flight.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"144\"><strong>get to + [destination]<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"480\">If we take the 7am train, we\u2019ll get to New York by 9.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"144\"><strong>get home<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"480\">What time does your husband get home from work?<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"144\"><strong>get there<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"480\">Please call me when you get there, so I know you arrived safely!<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>GET + PAST PARTICIPLE<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Finally, we use \u201cget\u201d with a lot of verbs in the past participle, also meaning to become or to change status, or when something is done to you.<\/p>\n<p>We <strong>get dressed<\/strong> in the morning &#8211; that\u2019s an action we do ourselves &#8211; but we also <strong>get hired<\/strong> for a job, <strong>get paid,<\/strong> and <strong>get fired<\/strong> from a job &#8211; that\u2019s something the company does to us.<\/p>\n<p>If you apply to a college, you would <strong>get accepted<\/strong> by that college. Hopefully you don\u2019t <strong>get caught<\/strong> doing something wrong; if you\u2019re a criminal, you might <strong>get arrested<\/strong> by the police.<\/p>\n<p>You could also <strong>get hurt<\/strong> or <strong>get killed<\/strong> &#8211; those are two very common collocations.
