We\u2019d typically do this when joining a social group, not so much in a job interview unless they ask you specifically about what you like to do outside of work.<\/p>\n<p>To introduce a hobby\/interest you can say:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>I enjoy +ing<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>I enjoy running\/baking\/reading.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>I like\/love + to\/ing<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>I like to do yoga.<\/li>\n<li>I love traveling.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>I\u2019m really into + noun\/topic<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>I\u2019m really into science fiction \/ martial arts \/ sports.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So that\u2019s your present:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your name<\/li>\n<li>Where you\u2019re from<\/li>\n<li>What you do<\/li>\n<li>Your family (optional, depends on context)<\/li>\n<li>Your hobbies\/interests (in informal introductions)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>My example:<\/strong> My name\u2019s Shayna and I\u2019m from the U.S. I\u2019m an English teacher and I\u2019m married with two kids. I love working out and listening to podcasts.<\/p>\n<h4>Past<\/h4>\n<p>Next, say a little bit about your past. You don\u2019t want to tell your whole life history here &#8211; just some of the highlights or the most important elements.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re in a professional situation like an interview or a networking event, you could talk about your degrees\/qualifications and your past work experience:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I have a degree\/certification in\u2026 [area of study]<\/li>\n<li>I graduated from\u2026 [college or university]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-23963\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/graduation-4502796_640-257x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"257\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/graduation-4502796_640-257x300.jpg 257w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/graduation-4502796_640.jpg 343w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 257px) 100vw, 257px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To talk about your past work, you can say:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>My background is in\u2026 [area of work\/learning]<\/li>\n<li>I worked\u2026 where I was responsible for\u2026<\/li>\n<li>I have lots of experience\u2026<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So if I was in a job interview for a position as an English teacher, I could say \u201cI have a CELTA certification in teaching English to adults, and over ten years of experience leading individual and group classes as well as teaching online.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re introducing yourself in a situation that\u2019s <em>NOT<\/em> related to work, then you could say one of these things about your past:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>How long you\u2019ve lived in the area:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;I recently moved here for college.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;I\u2019ve been living in New York for about 7 years now.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>What made you interested in the topic\/hobby\/event, or how long you\u2019ve been involved:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Joining a sports team: &#8220;I was on a soccer team in high school, and I usually played defense.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Joining a painting class: &#8220;I\u2019ve always loved painting, but I\u2019ve never taken a class before.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Meeting someone you don\u2019t know at a wedding\/party: &#8220;I\u2019ve known Amy for many years &#8211; I\u2019ll start with a job interview situation:<\/p>\n<h3>How to introduce yourself in an interview<\/h3>\n<p>In an interview, you don&#8217;t necessarily need to say your name, because the interviewer already knows it. But you can still follow the present-past-future model to answer when the interviewer says &#8220;Tell me a little about yourself.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Example for a Marketing position:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Present:<\/strong> &#8220;I&#8217;m currently a Digital Marketing Specialist at XYZ Agency, where I manage social media campaigns.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Past:<\/strong> &#8220;I have a solid background in marketing, with a Bachelor&#8217;s degree and five years\u2019 experience. Most of my projects have involved increasing online presence for non-profits.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Future:<\/strong> &#8220;I&#8217;m excited about the opportunity to bring my expertise to your team, and I&#8217;m especially interested in using data analysis to increase user engagement on your company\u2019s social media channels.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Example for a Project Manager role:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Present:<\/strong> &#8220;I\u2019m interested in your project coordinator role because I think it\u2019s a great fit for my experience and career interests.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Past:<\/strong> &#8220;I have a Master&#8217;s degree in Project Management, and in my most recent role I was responsible for overseeing collaboration among multiple teams.
