A student asked me when we use each one in English. Great question!<\/p>\n<p>They both have a similar meaning &#8211; talking about possibility &#8211; something might happen, or it might not.<\/p>\n<p>But we use <strong>maybe<\/strong> (one word) as an adverb to help the main verb of the sentence, whereas <strong>may be<\/strong> (two words) is the main verb of the sentence. Let me show you some examples:<\/p>\n<p>I can say, <strong>\u201cMaybe<\/strong> I\u2019ll go to the gym later.\u201d The main verb phrase is &#8220;will go,&#8221; and maybe means that my action of going to the gym is possible, but not certain.<\/p>\n<p>If I\u2019m stuck in unusually bad traffic, I could say \u201cThere <strong>may be<\/strong> an accident up ahead.\u201d Here, the main verb phrase is &#8220;may be,&#8221; meaning there may exist an accident.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20516\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20516\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-20516\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/traffic-jam-1776490_640-300x173.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"173\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/traffic-jam-1776490_640-300x173.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/traffic-jam-1776490_640.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20516\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">There may be an accident up ahead.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Another example, let\u2019s say my husband is working late and he calls me to say, <strong>\u201cMaybe<\/strong> I\u2019ll get a pizza on the way home from work.\u201d (main verb &#8211; &#8220;will get,&#8221; and maybe is an adverb of possibility)<\/p>\n<p>But I respond, \u201cThe pizza place <strong>may be<\/strong> closed by the time you finish work!\u201d (&#8220;may be&#8221; is the main verb phrase).<\/p>\n<p>In everyday spoken English, at least in American English, we tend to use \u201cmight be\u201d instead of \u201cmay be\u201d with the same meaning that it&#8217;s possible:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The pizza place <strong>might be<\/strong> closed.<\/li>\n<li>There <strong>might be<\/strong> an accident.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now you know the difference between <strong>maybe<\/strong> (adverb) and <strong>may be<\/strong> (main verb phrase)!<\/p>\n<div class=\"alert\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/espressoenglish.lpages.co\/free-pdf-ask-the-teacher\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-23071\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/30-LESSONS-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/30-LESSONS-1.png 1000w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/30-LESSONS-1-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/30-LESSONS-1-768x513.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a class=\"elementor-button large green rounded\" href=\"https:\/\/espressoenglish.lpages.co\/free-pdf-ask-the-teacher\/\"><strong>Download more lessons<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h4>More examples of &#8220;maybe&#8221;:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Maybe<\/strong> we can go for a walk in the park this afternoon.<\/li>\n<li>I&#8217;m not sure if I can make it to the party, but <strong>maybe<\/strong> I&#8217;ll drop by later.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Maybe<\/strong> the solution to the problem lies in trying a different approach.<\/li>\n<li>Do you think it will rain tomorrow?
