Make sure to download the lesson guide to review all of today\u2019s vocabulary and expressions.<\/p>\n<p>First we\u2019ll learn 10 other words for money, including some slang, then some collocations (words commonly used together with money), and finally some idioms and expressions with money.<\/p>\n<h3>Money words<\/h3>\n<p>Another word for money is <strong>cash.<\/strong> This is typically used for physical money &#8211; bills and coins &#8211; in contrast to a credit\/debit card. But in the business world there are also terms like <strong>cash reserves<\/strong> and <strong>cash flow<\/strong> that refer to how much money the business has and how money moves through the business.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-23062\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/coins-1726618_640.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/coins-1726618_640.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/coins-1726618_640-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You might also hear the word <strong>change<\/strong> referring to money. Change can refer specifically to coins &#8211; for example, someone on the street might ask if you can spare any change, meaning can you give them any extra coins you have. Change also refers to the money you receive back when you pay too much. If something costs $15 and you give the store a $20 bill, you\u2019ll receive $5 back, that $5 is the change from your purchase.<\/p>\n<p>In American English we\u2019ve got the word <strong>bucks,<\/strong> which is an informal word for dollars. For example, I bought this jacket for 30 bucks.<\/p>\n<p>Another thing you\u2019ll often see when talking about larger amounts is <strong>K<\/strong> meaning thousand. You might see a job offering a salary of 60K, meaning 60 thousand dollars per year. Or a house that costs 400K, meaning 400 thousand dollars.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-23063\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/money-1428594_640.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"402\" height=\"268\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/money-1428594_640.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/money-1428594_640-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 402px) 100vw, 402px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One more formal word for money is <strong>funds<\/strong> &#8211; you\u2019ll often see this in the world of business, government, and non-profit organizations.<\/p>\n<p>When talking about an individual person\u2019s money, you could refer to their <strong>wealth,<\/strong> their total accumulation of money and possessions.<\/p>\n<p>A couple very informal slang words for money are <strong>dough<\/strong> and <strong>moolah<\/strong> &#8211; if you hear about someone who spent $500 on a fancy dinner, you could say \u201cWow, that\u2019s a lotta moolah for one meal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Or if someone is very rich, we could say they are \u201crolling in dough\u201d &#8211; have so much money that they could practically lie down and roll around in it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-23058\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/money-1302828_640-300x214.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/money-1302828_640-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/money-1302828_640-211x150.jpg 211w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/money-1302828_640-422x300.jpg 422w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/money-1302828_640.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Next we\u2019ve got the word <strong>fortune,<\/strong> and this means a LOT of money. Someone who wins the lottery would win a fortune. Here in the U.S. lots of people spend a fortune on college education, which can be really expensive.<\/p>\n<p>And finally we\u2019ve got the words <strong>peanuts<\/strong> and <strong>a pittance<\/strong> which both mean very little money. These are the two verbs we use for receiving money from your efforts.<\/p>\n<p>Of course we <strong>spend money<\/strong> &#8211; use it to buy things. Some things are <strong>worth a lot of money<\/strong>, meaning they\u2019re expensive because they have a lot of value.<\/p>\n<p>We can <strong>deposit money<\/strong> in the bank (meaning put it into the bank account) or <strong>withdraw money<\/strong> (meaning take it out).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-23059\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/atm-1524871_640.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"408\" height=\"272\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/atm-1524871_640.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/atm-1524871_640-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 408px) 100vw, 408px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the business world, you\u2019ll hear about <strong>allocating money<\/strong>, that means deciding how money is distributed among different places or projects. I think everyone should learn how to <strong>manage their mone<\/strong>y, meaning use it in a carefully considered way.<\/p>\n<p>A smart thing to do is to <strong>save money<\/strong>, keep it for a long time. You might also <strong>set aside money<\/strong>, meaning reserve it for a specific purpose, like buying a car or paying for a wedding. You can also <strong>invest money<\/strong> by putting it in the stock market and hoping the businesses in the economy grow over time.<\/p>\n<p>Be careful not to <strong>squander\/waste your money,<\/strong> meaning to spend it in a way that\u2019s just not productive, almost like throwing it away.<\/p>\n<p>If you spend too much, then you might need to <strong>stretch your money\/paycheck,<\/strong> meaning to try to make a small amount last a long time. You could also say that <strong>money is tight<\/strong>, meaning you only have a little or just enough, no extra.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-23060\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/bust-2794420_640.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"398\" height=\"209\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/bust-2794420_640.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/bust-2794420_640-300x158.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 398px) 100vw, 398px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But if you do have some extra, you can <strong>donate money<\/strong> &#8211; give it away &#8211; to a charity or a good cause.<\/p>\n<h3>Money idioms<\/h3>\n<p>We\u2019ll wrap up this lesson with a few idioms and expressions using the word money.<\/p>\n<p>If someone is VERY rich, we can say that person has <strong>money to burn<\/strong> or that <strong>money is no object<\/strong> for him or her.<\/p>\n<p>But for most of us, <strong>money doesn\u2019t grow on trees,<\/strong> meaning it\u2019s not so easily available; we have to work hard for it.<\/p>\n<p>When something provides a lot of value for the price, we say you <strong>get your money\u2019s worth<\/strong>. If there\u2019s a pair of shoes that\u2019s a bit expensive, but they last for 10 years, that would be an example of getting your money\u2019s worth.<\/p>\n<p>The opposite is <strong>pouring money down the drain<\/strong>, that\u2019s a funny expression for spending money that doesn\u2019t get you any real benefit. If a business pays for expensive advertising on TV but gets very few customers from it, that\u2019s pouring money down the drain.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-23061\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/down-the-drain-4708734_640.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"335\" height=\"318\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/down-the-drain-4708734_640.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/down-the-drain-4708734_640-300x285.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 335px) 100vw, 335px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Finally we\u2019ve got the phrase <strong>right on the money<\/strong>, and this actually isn\u2019t related to money at all. This expression means to be perfectly correct or perfectly accurate.
