The United States and the USA.<\/p>\n<p>Another exception is t<strong>he United Kingdom<\/strong> or <strong>the UK.<\/strong> For the individual countries in the United Kingdom, we don&#8217;t use the. We say England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Don&#8217;t say \u201cthe England\u201d \u2013 but you <em>must<\/em> say the UK, the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>Some other countries that fall into this category of exceptions are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the Philippines<\/li>\n<li>the Netherlands<\/li>\n<li>the United Arab Emirates<\/li>\n<li>the Dominican Republic<\/li>\n<li>the Democratic Republic of the Congo<\/li>\n<li>the Bahamas<\/li>\n<li>the Marshall Islands.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A quick note about islands:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When we have <strong>a group of islands<\/strong>, we usually say &#8220;the&#8221; \u2013 the Marshall Islands, which is a country, or the Hawaiian islands within the U.S.<\/li>\n<li>For <strong>a single island<\/strong>, we don\u2019t use \u201cthe\u201d if the word \u201cisland\u201d is last: Long Island, Easter Island, Prince Edward Island.
