You just need to remember it for each verb.<\/p>\n<p>Some verbs that are followed by the infinitive are <strong>decide, hope, need, offer, plan, promise,<\/strong> and <strong>want.<\/strong> You <strong>decided to learn<\/strong> English (not &#8220;decided learning English&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>Some verbs that are followed by the -ING form are <strong>avoid, enjoy, finish, practice, don\u2019t mind,<\/strong> and <strong>can\u2019t stand.<\/strong> I <strong>avoid eating<\/strong> fast food (not &#8220;avoid to eat&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Like<\/strong> and <strong>love<\/strong> can be followed by both:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I like reading. I like to read.<\/li>\n<li>I love teaching. I love to teach.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Would like<\/strong> and <strong>would love<\/strong> can ONLY be followed by the infinitive:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I\u2019d like to travel more.<\/li>\n<li>I\u2019d love to join you for dinner.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I highly recommend making your own example sentences with each verb from this lesson!
