Telling people to \u201clisten up\u201d means you want them to pay attention. This is an example of a phrasal verb being used as a command.<\/p>\n<p>Another one you probably know is <strong>\u201cWatch out!\u201d<\/strong> &#8211; we use this when we want to warn somebody about danger.<\/p>\n<p>Today I\u2019ll teach you 20 phrasal verbs that are often used as commands, and what they mean. Phrasal verbs like these are so common in everyday English, but they can be a little hard to learn because they\u2019re all so similar \u2013 back off, back out, back up, back away, etc.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why I created the <a href=\"https:\/\/espressoenglish.lpages.co\/phrasal-verbs-in-conversation-course\/\"><strong>Phrasal Verbs in Conversation Course<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 to help you learn them in a natural way, by studying conversations. We usually use this for minor sadness, not for major things like if someone\u2019s sad about a death or major tragedy. If my daughter is sad because it\u2019s raining and we can\u2019t go to the playground, I might say \u201ccheer up! We can still do fun things at home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-thumbnail wp-image-21673\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/emoji-gb1e24580d_640-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/emoji-gb1e24580d_640-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/emoji-gb1e24580d_640-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/emoji-gb1e24580d_640.png 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Next we have <strong>\u201ccalm down!\u201d<\/strong> and <strong>\u201cchill out!\u201d<\/strong> \u2013 these are telling someone to stop being angry or upset.<\/p>\n<p>If someone is acting very immature, so that means an adult acting like a child, doing silly\/annoying things, we can tell them to <strong>\u201cgrow up!\u201d<\/strong> \u2013 this means \u201cact like an adult, stop being childish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-21680\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/grow-up.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/grow-up.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/grow-up-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When someone is acting aggressively, for example, a pushy salesperson is getting right up in your face, or someone is trying to start an argument with you in a bar, you can say <strong>\u201cback off!\u201d <\/strong>to tell them to stop bothering or threatening you.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-21681\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/back-off.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When you want someone to wait a moment, or a few moments, you can say <strong>\u201cHang on!\u201d<\/strong> or <strong>\u201cHold on!\u201d<\/strong> \u2013 these are both telling them to wait.<\/p>\n<p>We also have the phrasal verb command <strong>\u201cWait up!\u201d<\/strong> and this is used in a very specific situation, when someone is leaving or walking away from you and you want them to wait or slow down, so that you can catch up and go with them.<\/p>\n<p>And the other person might tell you <strong>\u201cHurry up!\u201d<\/strong> \u2013 they are telling you to move faster.<\/p>\n<p>The expression <strong>\u201cCome on!\u201d<\/strong> has a few different meanings. You can say \u201cCome on!\u201d to encourage someone to move faster, similar to \u201churry up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You can also say \u201cCome on!\u201d to encourage someone to do something you want them to do \u2013 like if everyone is dancing but one friend is sitting on the side, you could say \u201cCome on!\u201d to encourage them to join.<\/p>\n<p>If you say \u201ccome on\u201d in an irritated voice, it\u2019s expressing your annoyance. Like when I need to print something out urgently and my computer gives me an error, I\u2019d say \u201cOh come on!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If your friend or one of your kids is acting guilty, like they\u2019re ashamed or trying to hide something from you, you could say <strong>\u201cfess up!\u201d<\/strong> \u2013 this is telling the person to confess, to reveal to you what they did, especially if it was something bad or wrong.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-21678\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/man-g21877a22e_640-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/man-g21877a22e_640-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/man-g21877a22e_640-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/man-g21877a22e_640.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If someone is taking a relatively minor situation too seriously, you could tell them, <strong>\u201clighten up!\u201d <\/strong>\u2013 this means to stop being excessively serious or strict; they should relax and be happier.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s say you want to sit on a bench at the park, but your kids are sitting there and taking up more space than necessary \u2013 you could tell them <strong>\u201cscoot over!\u201d <\/strong>which means to move to the side while in a sitting position \u2013 in order to make room for you to sit on the bench, too.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-21677\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/family-g2ea3a5015_640-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/family-g2ea3a5015_640-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/family-g2ea3a5015_640.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sometimes when I\u2019m taking a fitness class at the gym, the instructor tells us to <strong>\u201cpartner up\u201d <\/strong>or <strong>\u201cbuddy up\u201d<\/strong> <strong>\u2013 <\/strong>this means to form groups of two people each.
