And we can reverse these to talk about something we DO like \u2013 \u201cI\u2019m crazy about \/ I\u2019m fond of\u201d something you enjoy.<\/p>\n<h4>I&#8217;m not a big fan of&#8230; \/ I don&#8217;t care for&#8230;<\/h4>\n<p>Another similar expression is to say \u201cI\u2019m not a big fan of something.\u201d When describing what kinds of movies you like, you might say \u201cI\u2019m not a big fan of horror movies\u201d \u2013 it means you don\u2019t like them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-21302\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/window-g0c7e3ead3_640-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/window-g0c7e3ead3_640-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/window-g0c7e3ead3_640.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Or you could say \u201cI don\u2019t really care for horror movies\u201d \u2013 saying you don\u2019t care for something is the same as saying you don\u2019t like it. I tried a new flavor of coffee the other day and I really didn\u2019t care for it, it had a strange taste.<\/p>\n<h4>It&#8217;s not my cup of tea<\/h4>\n<p>Speaking of beverages, another expression is \u201cIt\u2019s not my cup of tea\u201d meaning it\u2019s not something you like or prefer. I often hear this used to talk about activities \u2013 sports or hobbies \u2013 or media like books, music, movies. If you hate the outdoors, then you would say \u201cHiking is not my cup of tea.\u201d We typically do not reverse this expression; we use it only for dislikes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-21300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/dislike-gec2d9ab15_640-271x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"145\" height=\"161\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/dislike-gec2d9ab15_640-271x300.png 271w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/dislike-gec2d9ab15_640.png 579w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 145px) 100vw, 145px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4>It&#8217;s not for me \/ It&#8217;s not my thing<\/h4>\n<p>A couple more phrases are \u201cIt\u2019s not for me\u201d and \u201cIt\u2019s not my thing.\u201d These phrases acknowledge that your dislikes are your personal preferences, you recognize that other people might enjoy the things you dislike. My grandmother loves knitting, but it\u2019s not my thing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-21299\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/grandma-gc3d0ca5c1_640-206x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"206\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/grandma-gc3d0ca5c1_640-206x300.png 206w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/grandma-gc3d0ca5c1_640.png 439w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 206px) 100vw, 206px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4>I&#8217;ll pass<\/h4>\n<p>When people invite you to do something you dislike, or offer you something you dislike, you can say \u201cI\u2019ll pass.\u201d If you\u2019re afraid of heights and your friends invite you to go skydiving, you\u2019d say \u201cI\u2019ll pass.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-21306\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/skydiving-gd062287f9_640-300x200.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/skydiving-gd062287f9_640-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/skydiving-gd062287f9_640.png 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This can also be used for things you don\u2019t necessarily dislike, but you just don\u2019t want in the moment. So if you need to drive soon and you\u2019re offered some strong alcohol, you might say \u201cI\u2019ll pass\u201d because you don\u2019t want it at the moment, even though you might accept it another time.<\/p>\n<h4>I can&#8217;t stand it<\/h4>\n<p>If you REALLY don\u2019t like something, you can say \u201cI can\u2019t stand it.\u201d This is a stronger expression. I can\u2019t stand it when people drive while texting on their cell phones, it\u2019s so dangerous!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-21305\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/people-g9e6aa5ffb_640-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/people-g9e6aa5ffb_640-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/people-g9e6aa5ffb_640.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4>I find it&#8230; (boring \/ annoying)<\/h4>\n<p>Finally, if someone asks you why you\u2019re not a fan of something, why you don\u2019t like it, you can use the phrase \u201cI find it\u2026 \u201c and then complete it with an adjective like boring or annoying.<\/p>\n<h4>I&#8217;d rather&#8230;<\/h4>\n<p>A more positive way to respond would be to say \u201cI\u2019d rather\u2026\u201d and then say what you would prefer.
