{"id":21009,"date":"2022-11-20T08:53:39","date_gmt":"2022-11-20T13:53:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/?p=21009"},"modified":"2022-01-25T19:39:21","modified_gmt":"2022-01-26T00:39:21","slug":"dont-say-more-better","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/dont-say-more-better\/","title":{"rendered":"Don\u2019t say \u201cmore better\u201d!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IcJfla-1h0s?rel=0\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><center><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><a class=\"elementor-button rounded large blue\" style=\"color: #ffffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/espressoenglish.lpages.co\/advanced-english-grammar-course\/\"><strong>Advanced Grammar Course<\/strong><\/a><\/span><\/center><br \/>\nToday I\u2019m going to explain why we <strong>never use the phrase \u201cmore better.\u201d<\/strong> I sometimes hear students say this, for example, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>\u201cMy English is getting more better\u201d<\/strong><\/span> \u2013 but it\u2019s always incorrect.<\/p>\n<p>The reason is this: to compare good things, we use <strong>good \u2013 better \u2013 best:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Maria\u2019s English is <strong>good<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Ivan\u2019s English is <strong>better<\/strong> than Maria\u2019s.<\/li>\n<li>Sonia\u2019s English is the <strong>best<\/strong> in the class.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And to compare bad things, we use <strong>bad \u2013 worse \u2013 worst:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The first movie was <strong>bad<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The second movie was <strong>worse<\/strong> than the first.<\/li>\n<li>The third movie was the <strong>worst<\/strong> of all.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We only use \u201cmore\u201d and \u201cmost\u201d to compare with adjectives that are longer words \u2013 like convenient, interesting, or expensive:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This book is <strong>interesting<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The documentary is <strong>more interesting<\/strong> than the book.<\/li>\n<li>This is the <strong>most interesting<\/strong> class I\u2019ve ever taken.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But we never use \u201cmore\u201d or \u201cmost\u201d together with better or worse, OK?<\/p>\n<p>Now we can use the word \u201c<strong>much<\/strong>\u201d with to add extra emphasis and say that something is a LOT better\/worse, not just a little bit better\/worse. For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Now I understand this topic <strong>much better!<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The weather will get <strong>much worse<\/strong> this weekend.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And we can also add \u201cmuch\u201d to the comparative adjectives that use \u201cmore\u201d:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Washing clothes in a machine is <strong>much more convenient<\/strong> than washing clothes by hand.<\/li>\n<li>A car is <strong>much more expensive<\/strong> than a bicycle.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Again, we are saying that it\u2019s a LOT more convenient or expensive, not just a little.<\/p>\n<p>I hope this helps make things clear!
