There are many different ways to say Hello <\/strong>and Goodbye <\/strong>in English. In this lesson, you’ll learn some of the most common greetings and goodbyes. The greetings are divided into three groups with appropriate responses.<\/p>\n

English Greetings: Group 1<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Hi \/ Hi there \/ Hello \/ Hey \/ Hiya \/ Howdy<\/h4>\n

Group 1 Responses<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Hi, how are ya? \/ Hey, how’s it goin’?<\/h4>\n

English Greetings: Group 2<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

How ya doin’? \/ How are ya? \/ How’s it goin’? \/ How are things? \/ How’s life?<\/h4>\n

Group 2 Responses<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Good, and you? \/ All right, how about you?<\/h4>\n

You can also say what you’ve been doing recently. For example:<\/p>\n

“How are things?”<\/p>\n

“Good! I’m really looking forward to my vacation next month. And you?”<\/p>\n

“How’s it goin’?”<\/p>\n

“All right. I’ve been working a lot lately. How about you?”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

English Greetings: Group 3<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

What’s up? \/ What’s new? \/ What are you up to?*<\/h4>\n

* Some people pronounce “What are you up to?” as “Whatcha up to?”<\/em><\/p>\n

Group 3 Responses<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

Not much. \/ Not much, how about you?<\/h4>\n

Similarly to group 2, you can also give some information about your current or recent activities in order to continue the conversation:<\/p>\n

“Whatcha up to?”<\/p>\n

“Not much, I’m just preparing some material for my class tomorrow. And you?”<\/p>\n

“What’s new?”<\/p>\n

“Not much. I had a job interview the other day – I think it went pretty well!”<\/p>\n

“Oh, really? Where did you interview?”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Goodbyes in English<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Bye \/ Bye-bye \/ See ya soon \/ See ya later \/ Catch ya later \/ Check ya later \/ Take care \/ Take it easy \/ Have a good one!<\/h4>\n
