Click on the link to learn more and download those e-books \u2013 they also come with audio.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/learn-essential-english-grammar-so-you-can-understand-it-clearly-and-use-it-confidently\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-20584\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/grammar-ebooks-small.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"358\" height=\"280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/grammar-ebooks-small.png 530w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/grammar-ebooks-small-300x234.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 358px) 100vw, 358px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>&#8220;If I were&#8221; &#8211; Imaginary situations<\/h4>\n<p>We use \u201cIf I were\u2026\u201d in imaginary situations \u2013 for example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cIf I were an animal, I\u2019d be a cat\u201d<\/strong> \u2013 obviously I\u2019m not really an animal, I\u2019m just imagining it.<\/li>\n<li>There\u2019s a song by Beyonc\u00e9 called <strong>\u201cif I were a boy\u201d<\/strong> \u2013 she\u2019s talking about what she would do if she were male instead of female; this is an imaginary situation, not a real possibility.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here are some more examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>If I were you,<\/strong> I\u2019d take that job \u2013 it seems like a good opportunity.<br \/>\n<em>(I\u2019m telling the other person what I would do if I were in their situation)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>I\u2019d buy a house on the beach <strong>if I were rich.<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>(I\u2019m not rich, but I\u2019m imagining being rich)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>If I were taller,<\/strong> I\u2019d join the basketball team.<br \/>\n<em>(I\u2019m definitely not very tall in real life, but I can imagine what I would do if I were taller)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-20660\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/bubble-19329_640-1-213x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"213\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/bubble-19329_640-1-213x300.jpg 213w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/bubble-19329_640-1.jpg 454w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 213px) 100vw, 213px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4>&#8220;If I was&#8221; &#8211; Real possibility in the past<\/h4>\n<p>We use \u201cIf I was&#8230;\u201d when we are talking about a past situation that was really possible:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I\u2019m sorry <strong>if I was rude.<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>(it\u2019s possible that I was actually rude)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>I\u2019m not sure <strong>if I was right or wrong<\/strong> to end the relationship.<br \/>\n<em>(it\u2019s possible that I was right to take that action, it\u2019s also possible that I was wrong)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>If I was drunk<\/strong> last night, then you shouldn\u2019t have let me drive home.<br \/>\n<em>(it\u2019s a real possibility that I really was drunk last night)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>My teacher always yelled at me <strong>if I was late to class.<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>(sometimes I was really late, and in those cases my teacher always yelled at me)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, in casual spoken English, many native speakers are starting to use \u201cif I was\u201d even in imaginary situations, for example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I\u2019m an administrative assistant.
