The first two categories are common nouns and proper nouns.<\/p>\n<h3>Common Nouns &amp; Proper Nouns + Examples<\/h3>\n<p>Common nouns are general words for things:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>park<\/li>\n<li>country<\/li>\n<li>person<\/li>\n<li>cat<\/li>\n<li>day<\/li>\n<li>company<\/li>\n<li>city<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Proper nouns are specific names:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Yellowstone National Park<\/li>\n<li>Japan<\/li>\n<li>Peter<\/li>\n<li>Fluffy (cat\u2019s name)<\/li>\n<li>Tuesday<\/li>\n<li>Starbucks<\/li>\n<li>New York<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We always capitalize the first letter of a proper noun. If the proper noun consists of multiple words, we capitalize each one (ex. South Africa).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-20568\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/city-407703_640.jpg\" alt=\"New York City = a proper noun\" width=\"500\" height=\"235\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/city-407703_640.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/city-407703_640-300x141.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Singular Nouns &amp; Plural Nouns + Examples<\/h3>\n<p>Next there are singular nouns (talking about one thing) and plural nouns (talking about multiple things).<\/p>\n<p>Some examples of singular nouns are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>banana<\/li>\n<li>hat<\/li>\n<li>class<\/li>\n<li>story<\/li>\n<li>life<\/li>\n<li>man<\/li>\n<li>foot<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Their plural forms are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>bananas<\/li>\n<li>hats<\/li>\n<li>classes<\/li>\n<li>stories<\/li>\n<li>lives<\/li>\n<li>men<\/li>\n<li>feet<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In most cases we form the plural noun simply by adding -S to the singular noun, but there are exceptions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We add -es to nouns that already end in -s (ex. bus &#8211;&gt; buses)<\/li>\n<li>We add -ies to nouns ending in -y (ex. baby &#8211;&gt; babies)<\/li>\n<li>Some nouns ending in an F sound end with -ves in the plural (ex. knife &#8211;&gt; knives)<\/li>\n<li>We have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/irregular-plurals-of-english-nouns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">irregular plural nouns<\/a> like man\/men and foot\/feet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20569\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20569\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20569 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/feet-619399_640-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/feet-619399_640-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/feet-619399_640.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20569\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;Feet&#8221; is the irregular plural noun of &#8220;foot&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Collective Nouns + Examples<\/h3>\n<p>One interesting type of noun is a collective noun \u2013 these words refer to a group of people\/things, but are usually treated as singular grammatically. Some examples of collective nouns would be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>family<\/li>\n<li>team<\/li>\n<li>army<\/li>\n<li>tribe<\/li>\n<li>crew<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These are groups of people, but we say &#8220;The team <strong>is<\/strong> practicing for the competition,&#8221; not &#8220;The team <strong>are<\/strong> practicing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>We also have collective nouns for groups of things, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>bunch<\/li>\n<li>stack<\/li>\n<li>pile<\/li>\n<li>collection<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I\u2019d say &#8220;The pile of clothes on my bed <strong>is<\/strong> getting bigger&#8221; Uncountable Nouns + Examples<\/h3>\n<p>Finally we have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/countable-and-uncountable-nouns\/\">countable and uncountable nouns.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Countable nouns are things we can easily separate and count:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>books<\/li>\n<li>animals<\/li>\n<li>pencils<\/li>\n<li>ideas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Uncountable nouns are things that we can\u2019t easily separate and count:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>rice<\/li>\n<li>butter<\/li>\n<li>happiness<\/li>\n<li>advice<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We never make uncountable nouns plural, so we can\u2019t say <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em><strong>butters<\/strong> <\/em><\/span>or <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em><strong>advices<\/strong><\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>And we don\u2019t use \u201ca\/an\u201d before an uncountable noun, so we can\u2019t say <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>\u201ca rice\u201d<\/strong><\/span> or <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>\u201can advice\u201d<\/strong><\/span> \u2013 instead, we can say <strong>\u201ca grain of rice,\u201d \u201ca bag of rice,\u201d<\/strong> or <strong>\u201ca piece of advice.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-20572 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/rice-498688_640-300x186.jpg\" alt=\"The word &quot;rice&quot;
