&#8211; the first thing to know is it&#8217;s always used in the plural, so we always say &#8220;congratulations&#8221; and not &#8220;congratulation,&#8221; OK?<\/p>\n<h4>Congratulations + Noun<\/h4>\n<p>When congratulations is followed by a NOUN, then we always say congratulations ON.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Congratulations on <strong>the promotion.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Congratulations on <strong>your new home.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Congratulations on <strong>your wedding.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Congratulations on <strong>the birth of your baby.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Congratulations on <strong>your success.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-20554\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/family-2610205_640-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/family-2610205_640-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/family-2610205_640.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4>Congratulations + VERB<\/h4>\n<p>When congratulations is followed by a VERB in the -ING form, then we can say ON or FOR, but ON is much, much more common:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Congratulations on <strong>being<\/strong> elected class president.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Congratulations on <strong>graduating<\/strong> from college.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Congratulations on <strong>finding<\/strong> a job.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Congratulations on <strong>finishing<\/strong> the marathon.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Congratulations for <strong>winning<\/strong> the gymnastics competition.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Congratulations for <strong>getting<\/strong> the highest grade in the class.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-19843\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/graduation-879941_640-1-300x198.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/graduation-879941_640-1-300x198.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/graduation-879941_640-1.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For&#8221; can only be used in cases where the person achieved something, not when something happened to them.<\/p>\n<p>So we&#8217;d always say &#8220;congratulations <strong>ON<\/strong> winning the lottery&#8221; (since that was by luck and not skill or hard work) but we can say &#8220;congratulations <strong>FOR<\/strong> or <strong>ON<\/strong> winning the gymnastics competition&#8221; since that is an achievement.<\/p>\n<p>Again, at least in American English, <strong>&#8220;ON&#8221; is still much more common<\/strong> even when talking about achievements.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-20555\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/cup-1615074_640.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"475\" height=\"253\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/cup-1615074_640.png 640w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/cup-1615074_640-300x160.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 475px) 100vw, 475px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4>Congratulations to<\/h4>\n<p>What about &#8220;congratulations to&#8221;?<\/p>\n<p>We occasionally use that if we want to specify the person\/group receiving our congratulations:<\/p>\n<p>For example, if the president of the company is making a speech to all employees and she wants to specify one group, she could say &#8220;<strong>Congratulations to the marketing team<\/strong> for finishing this project in record time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Or if my friend and his wife recently adopted a child, I could say &#8220;<strong>Congratulations to both of you<\/strong> on becoming parents!&#8221;<\/p>\n<h4>Congratulate + a person<\/h4>\n<p>When we use &#8220;congratulate,&#8221; the verb, then we NEVER use &#8220;to&#8221; after it:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0He <strong>congratulated me<\/strong> on quitting smoking.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0I&#8217;d like to <strong>congratulate her<\/strong> on her spectacular performance.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Before I forget, let me <strong>congratulate you<\/strong> on your Ph.D.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>OK?
