A lot of students ask me about the best way to learn them \u2013 and I think it\u2019s helpful to learn phrasal verbs in context, inside sentences, in situations where we\u2019d really use them. <\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the strategy we use inside my <a href=\"https:\/\/espressoenglish.lpages.co\/phrasal-verbs-in-conversation-course\/\"><strong>Phrasal Verbs in Conversation Course.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/espressoenglish.lpages.co\/phrasal-verbs-in-conversation-course\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20587\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/phrasal-verbs-small.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"230\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>TAKE BACK<\/h4>\n<p>Let\u2019s look at \u201ctake back\u201d first \u2013 we use it in two situations:<\/p>\n<p>One is when <strong>you want to \u201ccancel\u201d something you previously said and admit that it was wrong.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For example, imagine I\u2019m talking to my husband and complaining about my friend because she didn\u2019t reply to my e-mail \u2013 but then I find her message, so she had responded, but I just didn\u2019t see it. Then I might say \u201cI <strong>take back<\/strong> everything I said about her\u201d \u2013 I am admitting that my previous words were wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Or if I\u2019m arguing with my father and I say some mean and nasty comments to him, then later, when I\u2019m calmer, I might regret having said those things, and say, \u201cI wish I could <strong>take back<\/strong> what I said\u201d \u2013 I wish I could go back in time and cancel those comments or avoid saying them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-20208\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/woman-3192523_640.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"329\" height=\"257\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/woman-3192523_640.jpg 425w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/woman-3192523_640-300x234.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 329px) 100vw, 329px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The other situation is when something \u201ctakes you back\u201d by <strong>reminding you of a memory in the past,<\/strong> often a really old memory or a pleasant memory.<\/p>\n<p>If I hear a certain song that was meaningful to me as a teenager, I could say, \u201cOh wow, that song <strong>takes me back<\/strong> to high school\u201d because it\u2019s making me remember that time. If someone\u2019s cooking a holiday recipe that my grandmother used to make, I could say the smell <strong>takes me back<\/strong> to my childhood Christmases.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-20209\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/woman-5518008_640.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"396\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/woman-5518008_640.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/woman-5518008_640-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 396px) 100vw, 396px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>OK? So if you <strong>take back some words<\/strong>, you admit that your previous words were wrong. And if a sound, smell, sight, or something else <strong>takes you back to a past moment in time,<\/strong> it reminds you of it, it brings up the memory very clearly and strongly.<\/p>\n<h4>BE TAKEN ABACK<\/h4>\n<p>Now if you are \u201ctaken aback,\u201d that means <strong>you are surprised or shocked. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I already play the piano so I thought it would be easy to learn guitar, but I was <strong>taken aback<\/strong> by how difficult it was.<\/p>\n<p>We are often taken aback when we hear some surprising news \u2013 for example,<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cHe was <strong>taken aback<\/strong> to learn that his parents were getting a divorce after 30 years of marriage\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWe were all <strong>taken aback<\/strong> by the news that the company would be moving its offices to another country.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-20210\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/facial-expression-5494950_640-300x198.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/facial-expression-5494950_640-300x198.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/facial-expression-5494950_640.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you want to modify the level of surprise, you can say \u201cI was <strong>a bit<\/strong> taken aback\u201d for mild surprise, and \u201cI was <strong>really<\/strong> taken aback\u201d by strong surprise\/shock.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, with taken aback, we usually use it with a form of the verb &#8220;to be,&#8221; so we say:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>I was taken aback<\/strong> by the news.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><del>Not: The news <strong>took me aback.<\/strong><\/del><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now that you know how and when to use <strong>take back<\/strong> and <strong>taken aback<\/strong>, try to make your own sentences using these phrasal verbs.<\/p>\n<p>Inside the <a href=\"https:\/\/espressoenglish.lpages.co\/phrasal-verbs-in-conversation-course\/\"><strong>Phrasal Verbs in Conversation Course,<\/strong><\/a> each lesson includes short-answer questions that help you put the phrasal verbs from the lesson into practice \u2013 and then you can send in your answers to get feedback and correction from an Espresso English teacher.
