Let&#8217;s learn how to spell busyness and business, how to pronounce them, and their definitions in English.<\/p>\n<h4>How to pronounce &amp; spell BUSYNESS and BUSINESS<\/h4>\n<p>Business is two syllables, and busyness is three syllables:<\/p>\n<p>business =\u00a0<strong>BIZ\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; ness<\/p>\n<p>busyness =\u00a0<strong>BIZ\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; ee &#8211; ness<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s only one spelling difference &#8211; we spell\u00a0<strong>busyness\u00a0<\/strong>with a &#8220;y&#8221; in the middle, and\u00a0<strong>business\u00a0<\/strong>with an &#8220;i&#8221; in the middle.<\/p>\n<h4>BUSINESS: Definition<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Business<\/strong> is a noun, quite a common one, meaning commerce, the activity of buying and selling products and services. At EspressoEnglish we have a course on <a href=\"https:\/\/espressoenglish.lpages.co\/business-english-course\/\"><strong>Business English<\/strong><\/a>, the words and phrases typically used in work and professional life.<\/p>\n<p>During a really hot day, if lots of customers come into an ice cream store, the owner could say \u201c<strong>Business<\/strong> has been good today\u201d because the shop has sold a lot.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, <strong>a business<\/strong> is another word for a company \u2013 someone can <strong>start their own business<\/strong>, or work as a manager in <strong>a construction business<\/strong>, and so on.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-19932\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/people-1979261_640.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"466\" height=\"310\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/people-1979261_640.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/people-1979261_640-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 466px) 100vw, 466px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4>BUSYNESS: Definition<\/h4>\n<p>Now let&#8217;s define &#8220;busyness.&#8221; The definition of <strong>busyness<\/strong> \u2013 three syllables \u2013 is the state of being busy, having a lot of things to do, lots of responsibilities and tasks and scheduled activities.<\/p>\n<p>Busyness is not nearly as common of a word as business, but you\u2019ll sometimes see it. You could say, \u201cI took a vacation so I could have a break from the <strong>busyness<\/strong> of everyday life\u201d \u2013 again, it\u2019s the state of being busy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-19933\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/pedestrians-400811_640-300x198.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/pedestrians-400811_640-300x198.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/pedestrians-400811_640.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Or a college student who has a very intense few weeks at the end of the semester, might not have much time to hang out with her friends during the <strong>busyness<\/strong> of final exams \u2013 she has a lot of things to do, big assignments and studying for all those exams.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-19934\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/laptop-3087585_640-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/laptop-3087585_640-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/laptop-3087585_640.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One final example, think of a company that sells holiday decorations like Christmas lights \u2013 most of their sales are going to be made in December. So maybe in November, they start preparing for the <strong>busyness<\/strong> of the holiday season.<\/p>\n<p>You could say that <strong>business<\/strong> (that company) is preparing for a season of <strong>busyness<\/strong> (having a lot of things to do).<\/p>\n<p>Now you know when to use business vs. busyness.
