Because I\u2019m going to teach you five phrases that English <em>learners<\/em> often use, but that <em>native<\/em> English speakers would never say \u2013 either because they\u2019re incorrect or because these phrases just don\u2019t sound natural.<\/p>\n<p>Remember \u2013 I don\u2019t want you feel BAD about these mistakes; I want to help you <em>learn<\/em> from them instead! You can learn more in my <a href=\"https:\/\/espressoenglish.lpages.co\/200-common-errors-course\/\"><strong>200 Common Errors in English Course.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The truth is that it\u2019s quite common to fall into the habit of using unnatural phrases if you live in a place where you don\u2019t have much opportunity to talk with and listen to native English speakers. We even have an <a href=\"https:\/\/espressoenglish.lpages.co\/everyday-english-speaking-course\/\"><strong>Everyday English Speaking Course<\/strong><\/a> in which you can record your speaking and send it to us for correction and feedback!<\/p>\n<p>The best way to see what all our courses are like is to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/free-sample-lessons-try-them-today\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>try the free sample lessons<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>OK, phrase #1 that native English speakers never say is\u2026<\/p>\n<h3>#1 \u2013 John is married with Maria. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(incorrect)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>When talking about two people who are married, native English speakers never say \u201cmarried with\u201d \u2013 instead, say one of these:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>John is married <strong>to<\/strong> Maria.<\/li>\n<li>John and Maria <strong>are married.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s confusing because \u201cwith\u201d is often used for being together or interacting together \u2013 we <strong>talk with<\/strong> someone, we <strong>live with<\/strong> someone \u2013 but we are married <strong>to<\/strong> a husband\/wife.<\/p>\n<p>And we also <strong>get engaged to<\/strong> a person (that\u2019s when we promise\/agree to get married in the future) \u2013 engaged to, not engaged with.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_18527\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18527\" style=\"width: 254px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18527\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/ring-3892934_640.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"254\" height=\"252\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/ring-3892934_640.jpg 254w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/ring-3892934_640-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 254px) 100vw, 254px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-18527\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">diamonds set in gold bands<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>#2 &#8211; My son has five years old. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(incorrect)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Some languages use the verb \u201chave\u201d when talking about age, but in English we use the verb \u201cto be.\u201d So the correct way to say it is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>My son <strong>is<\/strong> five years old.<\/li>\n<li>My son <strong>is<\/strong> five.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you\u2019re talking about yourself, you\u2019d say \u201c<strong>I am<\/strong> 36 years old\u201d not \u201cI have 36 years,\u201d OK?<\/p>\n<p>And when <em>asking<\/em> about age, we would do it like this:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How old <strong>are<\/strong> you?<\/li>\n<li>How old <strong>is<\/strong> he\/she?<\/li>\n<li>How old <strong>are<\/strong> they?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Again, we use the verb \u201cto be,\u201d never \u201chave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-18798\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/cake-308576_640-300x293.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"293\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/cake-308576_640-300x293.png 300w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/cake-308576_640.png 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>#3 &#8211; I&#8217;ll pick up him from the airport. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(incorrect)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Phrase #3 native English speakers never say involves a problem with phrasal verbs, and that is saying things like \u201cI\u2019ll pick up him from the airport\u201d or \u201cThese eggs are bad, we should throw away them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Let me try to explain this very simply: when the phrasal verb has an <strong>object<\/strong> \u2013 meaning something that receives the action \u2013 <strong>if we use the object\u2019s name<\/strong>, then we can say it two ways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I\u2019ll pick <strong>John<\/strong> up.<\/li>\n<li>I\u2019ll pick up <strong>John<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>We should throw <strong>these eggs<\/strong> away.<\/li>\n<li>We should throw away <strong>these eggs.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, if we use a <strong>pronoun<\/strong> (a word like him, her, you, it, us, them), then <strong>the pronoun MUST go in the middle of the phrasal verb:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I\u2019ll pick <strong>him<\/strong> up.<\/li>\n<li>We should throw <strong>them<\/strong> away.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_18799\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18799\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-18799\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/rotten-4326830_640-300x172.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"172\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/rotten-4326830_640-300x172.png 300w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/rotten-4326830_640.png 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-18799\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">throw the food away \/ throw it away<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Check out our <a href=\"https:\/\/espressoenglish.lpages.co\/phrasal-verbs-in-conversation-course\/\">Phrasal Verbs in Conversation Course<\/a> to learn lots more phrasal verbs in English!<\/p>\n<h3>#4 &#8211; I like very much your lessons. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(incorrect)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>What\u2019s wrong with this sentence? At first glance, it doesn\u2019t appear to have any grammar mistakes\u2026 but here\u2019s the problem.<\/p>\n<p>When we have a <strong>verb<\/strong> (in this case, \u201clike\u201d) and a <strong>direct object<\/strong> (in this case, \u201cyour lessons\u201d) \u2013 we typically <strong>avoid putting anything in between the verb and its object.<\/strong> So a few better ways to say this are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I like your lessons <strong>very much.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>I <strong>really<\/strong> like your lessons.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Another example would be: \u201cI brushed quickly my teeth\u201d \u2013 it sounds unnatural to have a word (quickly) in the middle between the verb and its object, so we should say:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I <strong>quickly<\/strong> brushed my teeth.<\/li>\n<li>I brushed my teeth <strong>quickly<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-18800\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/brushing-teeth-2351803_640-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/brushing-teeth-2351803_640-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/brushing-teeth-2351803_640-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/brushing-teeth-2351803_640.png 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>#5 &#8211; &#8220;Do you like pizza?&#8221; \/ &#8220;Yes, I like.&#8221; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(incorrect)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Finally phrase #5 is an answer to a question: when someone asks a question like \u201cDo you like pizza?\u201d and an English learner might answer \u201cYes, I like.\u201d \u2013 this is not correct, it\u2019s not natural.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, native English speakers would say <strong>\u201cYes, I do\u201d<\/strong> or <strong>\u201cNo, I don\u2019t.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When someone asks you a yes\/no question with <strong>do<\/strong>, the short answer always uses do\/don\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>When someone asks you a yes\/no question with <strong>did<\/strong>, the short answer always uses did\/didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>So an example with \u201cdid,\u201d asking a question about the past, would be this:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;Did you have lunch?&#8221;<br \/>\n<strong>&#8220;Yes, I did \/ No, I didn\u2019t&#8221;<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>(Not \u201cYes, I had\u201d)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-18801\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/eatlunch-266x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"266\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/eatlunch-266x300.jpg 266w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/eatlunch.jpg 567w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 266px) 100vw, 266px\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>As you can see from these examples, these are NOT major, serious mistakes. They won\u2019t cause communication problems; however, they do make your English sound a little strange, and they make it obvious you\u2019re not a native English speaker.<\/p>\n<p>So if your goal is to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/how-to-speak-fluent-english-top-10-tips\/\">fluent in English<\/a>, then you should continually check for these little problems and fix them so that you can sound more natural.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, it can be hard to check for your own mistakes \u2013 and that\u2019s why it\u2019s nice to join a course where you can get some correction and some feedback from a teacher and native English speaker!<\/p>\n<p>A number of our courses have this feature \u2013 and again, you can learn more about them by clicking on the link in the video description.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s all for today, but if you found this lesson helpful, please let me know, and I\u2019ll make more videos like it in the future.
