In today\u2019s video you\u2019ll learn 20 phrasal verbs with \u201cget\u201d \u2013 I\u2019ll make them clear with definitions and examples.<\/p>\n<p>But there are many, many more phrasal verbs in English, and you can learn over 500 of them inside my course called <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/espressoenglish.lpages.co\/phrasal-verbs-in-conversation-course\/\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Phrasal Verbs in Conversation<\/a><\/strong>. Let\u2019s begin:<\/p>\n<h3>get across<\/h3>\n<p>Get across can mean to manage to go from one side to another, physically:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It\u2019s hard to<strong> get across<\/strong> the road when there\u2019s lots of traffic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It also has a meaning in communication: to get your point\/message across means to communicate it successfully:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The preacher used a powerful story to <strong>get his message across.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>get along<\/h3>\n<p>To get along with someone means to have a good relationship with that person. If you don\u2019t get along with someone, it means there\u2019s conflict and irritation in the relationship.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I <strong>get along with<\/strong> all my brothers and sisters.<\/li>\n<li>I <strong>don\u2019t get along with<\/strong> one of my coworkers \u2013 he\u2019s just so annoying.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>get around<\/h3>\n<p>One meaning of get around is to manage to go places physically:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The subway makes it easy to <strong>get around<\/strong> New York City.<\/li>\n<li>After she broke her leg, she used crutches to <strong>get around<\/strong> the house.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The expression <strong>get around to doing something<\/strong> means to finally manage to complete that task (often when we\u2019re having difficulty because we\u2019re so busy). We often use it in the negative form to say that he HAVEN\u2019T had time to do the task yet:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There are 56 emails in my inbox; I haven\u2019t <strong>gotten around to replying<\/strong> to them yet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>get away<\/h3>\n<p>To get away means to escape.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The dog <strong>got away<\/strong> from me at the park.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We can also use it for taking a short vacation from work, school, or other responsibilities of daily life:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We\u2019re hoping to <strong>get away<\/strong> to the mountains this weekend.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>get away with<\/h3>\n<p>If you get away with something, it means you do something wrong or bad, but you escape the consequences:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>My mother never found out I stole money from her purse, so I <strong>got away with<\/strong> it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>get back<\/h3>\n<p>We use the phrasal verb get back as an informal way to say return \u2013 a person returning to a place, or an object being returned to its owner:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The traffic was so bad, it took me an hour to <strong>get back<\/strong> home after work.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t lend him any books; you\u2019ll never <strong>get them back.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>get back at someone<\/h3>\n<p>The expression \u201cget back at someone\u201d is different \u2013 this means to get revenge.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>After Carly stole Sarah\u2019s boyfriend, Sarah <strong>got back at her<\/strong> by spreading nasty rumors about her.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>get back to \/ get back into<\/h3>\n<p>We also have get back to and get back into \u2013 these are used in slightly different ways. \u201cGet back to\u201d can mean returning to an activity after an interruption, or replying to someone\u2019s communication:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sorry I can\u2019t talk, I need to <strong>get back to<\/strong> studying for this test.<\/li>\n<li>I\u2019ll find out the answer and <strong>get back to<\/strong> you tomorrow.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Get back into is used when you return to being interested in an activity after some time away from it:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Now that I have more free time, I\u2019m <strong>getting back into<\/strong> painting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>get behind<\/h3>\n<p>Get behind has two meanings \u2013 it can mean to fail to accompany an expected schedule:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We\u2019re supposed to read a chapter a day, but I\u2019ve been sick so I <strong>got behind.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you get behind a person or cause, it means you support that person or cause:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The whole neighborhood <strong>got behind<\/strong> the proposal to build a new library.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>get by<\/h3>\n<p>Get by is used when you have barely enough money to survive:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We\u2019re having a hard time <strong>getting by<\/strong> ever since my husband lost his job.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>get down<\/h3>\n<p>Get down can mean to move down physically:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>She needed help to <strong>get down<\/strong> from the horse.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Another meaning is when something \u201cgets you down,\u201d meaning it makes you sad\/depressed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cold, dark winters always <strong>get me down.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>get in<\/h3>\n<p>Get in can mean to manage to go inside:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You can\u2019t just enter the building, you need a key card to <strong>get in.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s also an informal way to say \u201carrive\u201d:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Our flight <strong>gets in<\/strong> at 11PM.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>get into<\/h3>\n<p>Get into can mean to be accepted or admitted to a club, group, college, etc.:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>His grades were excellent and he <strong>got into<\/strong> a top university.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To get into an activity means to become interested\/involved in it:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>My parents have been <strong>getting into<\/strong> gardening recently.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>get off<\/h3>\n<p>Get off can mean to physically leave a bus, train, plane, bike, or motorcycle &#8211; or a surface:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We <strong>got off<\/strong> the bus at the last stop.<\/li>\n<li>No matter how many times I clean it, I can\u2019t <strong>get this stain off the floor.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s also an informal way to talk about leaving work:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What time do you <strong>get off<\/strong> work?<\/li>\n<li>I usually <strong>get off<\/strong> around 5:30.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>get on \/ get onto \/ get on with<\/h3>\n<p>We use get on \/ get onto for entering a bus, train, plane, bike, or motorcycle:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>He <strong>got on<\/strong> his motorcycle and rode away.<\/li>\n<li>Let\u2019s make sure we <strong>get onto<\/strong> the right train.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The expression \u201cget on with\u201d an activity means to proceed with that activity, often after a delay or interruption:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I told my kids to stop playing video games and <strong>get on with<\/strong> their chores.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>get out<\/h3>\n<p>Get out can mean to physically leave a place, or remove something from a place:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The weather was so bad, we couldn\u2019t <strong>get out<\/strong> of the house.<\/li>\n<li>Can you <strong>get the bags out<\/strong> of the car?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you tell someone \u201cGet out!\u201d it\u2019s an angry way to tell them to leave, to go away from you.<\/p>\n<p>We also have the expression \u201cget out of doing something,\u201d meaning to manage to escape a task or responsibility:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>My son pretended he was sick in order to <strong>get out of going<\/strong> to school.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>get over<\/h3>\n<p>To \u201cget over\u201d something means to recover from it, physically or emotionally:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I just<strong> got over<\/strong> a bad cold.<\/li>\n<li>It took her a long time to <strong>get over<\/strong> her dog\u2019s death.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We also have the expression \u201cI can\u2019t get over\u2026\u201d meaning \u201cI can\u2019t believe\u2026\u201d or \u201cI find it amazing\u201d:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>I can\u2019t get over<\/strong> how much she\u2019s changed since the last time I saw her!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>get through<\/h3>\n<p>The phrasal verb get through is used for proceeding with or finishing something difficult:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I couldn\u2019t <strong>get through<\/strong> the lesson; it was too hard.<\/li>\n<li>My friends helped me <strong>get through<\/strong> my first year at college.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>get to<\/h3>\n<p>We can use \u201cget to\u201d as an informal way to say \u201carrive\u201d:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Call me when you<strong> get to<\/strong> Chicago.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Another meaning is to have the opportunity to do something good\/special:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>At the circus, my kids <strong>got to<\/strong> eat as many snacks as they wanted.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If something \u201cgets to\u201d you, it means it annoys\/irritates you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It was just a minor mistake \u2013 don\u2019t let it <strong>get to you.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>get up<\/h3>\n<p>You already know \u201cget up\u201d \u2013 it means to get out of bed!
