Actually \/ Currently<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The first mistake is using <strong>actually<\/strong> when you should say <strong>currently<\/strong> &#8211; for example, if someone asks a student, \u201cWhere do you work now?\u201d and they say, \u201cI actually work at a university.\u201d This is incorrect.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Currently<\/strong> means \u201cnow, at the present moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The unemployment rate is <strong>currently <\/strong>8%.<br \/>\n<em>(the rate right now)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>I\u2019m <strong>currently <\/strong>taking a course with Espresso English.<br \/>\n<em>(I\u2019m taking a course now)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Actually<\/strong> means \u201cin reality,\u201d and it is often used to make corrections:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cYou\u2019re from Brazil so you speak Spanish, right?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201c<strong>Actually<\/strong>, Portuguese is spoken in Brazil.\u201d<br \/>\n<em>(making a correction)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>This article claims that unemployment is at 5%, but it\u2019s <strong>actually <\/strong>8%.<br \/>\n<em>(= the real\/true rate)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Error #109<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Don\u2019t say:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">I need to finish the project <strong>until\u00a0<\/strong>Friday.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>Say: <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #339966;\">I need to finish the project <strong>by\u00a0<\/strong>Friday.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When talking about with a time in the future, <strong>by<\/strong> is used for one specific event, and <strong>until<\/strong> is used for a continuous event. \u201cFinishing the project\u201d is a single moment in time (one specific event) so we use \u201cby Friday\u201d in this case.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s an example with <strong>until<\/strong>: \u201cCan I stay at your house until Friday?\u201d In this case, the action of \u201cstaying at your house\u201d is a continuous action that covers ALL the time from now to Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Here are more examples:<\/p>\n<p>Use <strong>by<\/strong> if a single event will happen before that point:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I will send you the information <strong>by\u00a0<\/strong>Friday. <em>(= before Friday)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Our guests will arrive <strong>by<\/strong> 6:00. <em>(= before 6:00)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Use <strong>until<\/strong> if a continuous event will continue and then stop at that point:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I\u2019ll be working on the project <strong>until\u00a0<\/strong>Friday.<br \/>\n<em>(= continuously until Friday; I will stop working on Friday) <\/em><\/li>\n<li>Our guests will stay <strong>until<\/strong> 9:00.<br \/>\n<em>(= continuously until 9:00; they will leave at 9:00)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Error #110 <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Don\u2019t say: <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">My roommates went out, so I\u2019m home <strong>only<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>Say: <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #339966;\">My roommates went out, so I\u2019m home <strong>alone<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Alone<\/strong> means \u201cby yourself\u201d \u2013 there is nobody else with you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I like to take long walks <strong>alone<\/strong> so that I have time to think.<\/li>\n<li>He got up and left the restaurant, leaving me <strong>alone<\/strong> at the table.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Only<\/strong> means \u201cjust one\u201d and can be used with people, objects, or actions. After the word <strong>only<\/strong>, we must have a person, object, or action.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dana was the <strong>only<\/strong> student who understood today\u2019s English lesson.<\/li>\n<li>I have<strong> only<\/strong> one pair of sunglasses.<\/li>\n<li>I didn\u2019t have a lot of money, so I <strong>only<\/strong> bought this T-shirt.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We also have the word <strong>lonely<\/strong> meaning \u201cfeeling sad and isolated\u201d \u2013 it is a negative emotion.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I was <strong>lonely<\/strong> on my first day of class because I didn\u2019t have any friends.<\/li>\n<li>She can\u2019t stand being single; she says she feels <strong>lonely<\/strong> without a boyfriend.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Error #111 <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Don\u2019t say:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">I sent the letter two months <strong>before<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>Say: <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #339966;\">I sent the letter two months <strong>ago<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #339966;\">I sent the letter two months <strong>back<\/strong>. (informal)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Ago<\/strong> and <strong>back<\/strong> <em>(informal)<\/em> are used for past times<em> from the present moment:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I graduated from high school ten years <strong>ago.<\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><em>(ten years in the past from today)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>We sent the package three days\u00a0<strong>ago.<\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><em>(three days in the past from today)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>I moved here about five years <strong>back.<\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><em>(<strong>informal<\/strong> \u2013 five years in the past from today)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Before<\/strong> and <strong>earlier<\/strong> are used for past times<em> from another time in the past<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Yesterday I missed my train. I got to the train station at 7:10, but the train had left ten minutes\u00a0<strong>before.<\/strong> (or ten minutes <strong>earlier<\/strong>)<br \/>\n<em>(= at 7:00, ten minutes before I got to the train station yesterday)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>I was very happy when I got this job last June, because I had lost my previous job six months\u00a0<strong>before.<\/strong> (or six months <strong>earlier<\/strong>).<br \/>\n<em>(= six months before last June)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Error #112<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Don\u2019t say: <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">I have <strong>so <\/strong>wonderful friends.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>Say:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #339966;\">I have <strong>such <\/strong>wonderful friends.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #339966;\">My friends are <strong>so\u00a0<\/strong>wonderful.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The rule here is simple:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>SO<\/strong> + adjective<\/li>\n<li><strong>SUCH<\/strong> + adjective + noun (object \/ person described)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Compare these sentences:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Their dog is <strong>so cute.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>They have <strong>such<\/strong> a cute dog.<\/li>\n<li>Her kids are <strong>so obedient.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>She has <strong>such<\/strong> obedient kids.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Error #113<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Don\u2019t say:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">I invited <strong>all the class<\/strong> to the party.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>Say:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #339966;\">I invited <strong>the entire<\/strong> <strong>class<\/strong> to the party.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #339966;\">I invited <strong>the whole<\/strong> <strong>class<\/strong> to the party. <em>(more informal)<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Use <strong>all<\/strong> with <em>plural<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/countable-and-uncountable-nouns\/\">countable<\/a> nouns to mean 100% of many things:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>All<\/strong> the <strong>students<\/strong> in the class have computers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>All<\/strong> the <strong>necklaces<\/strong> in this store are expensive.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Use <strong>whole<\/strong> or <strong>entire<\/strong> with <em>singular<\/em> countable nouns to mean 100% of one thing:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I ate the <strong>whole\/entire\u00a0<\/strong>pizza.<br \/>\n= 100% of one pizza.<\/li>\n<li>I finished reading the<strong> whole\/entire<\/strong> book in three days.<br \/>\n=100% of one book.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here are more examples that show the difference between <strong>all<\/strong> and <strong>whole:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I ate the <strong>whole\u00a0<\/strong>cake.<br \/>\n= 100% of one cake.<\/li>\n<li>I ate <strong>all<\/strong> the cakes.<br \/>\n= 100% of many cakes<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>whole<\/strong> house is messy.<br \/>\n= 100% of one house.<\/li>\n<li><strong>All the houses<\/strong> are messy.<br \/>\n= 100% of many houses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Coming back to our original example, we invited the class &#8211; one class. So we say I invited the whole class \/ the entire class.<\/p>\n<p>If we wanted to use the word students, plural, then we could say I invited <strong>all the students<\/strong> (many students). But class is singular so we say <strong>the whole class<\/strong> <strong>or the entire class<\/strong> (not all the class).<\/p>\n<p>This brings us to the end of our section on vocabulary &#8211; next, we\u2019ll dive into the most common spelling errors.
