In the moment, you might panic and not be able to think of the English words that you need \u2013 so it\u2019s good to learn and practice them beforehand. Today I\u2019ll be teaching you how to talk about various medical emergencies, accidents, and other dangers.<\/p>\n<p>If someone has <strong>cut themselves, <\/strong>they will be <strong>bleeding <\/strong>(that\u2019s the verb). <strong>Blood <\/strong>will be coming out of the person\u2019s body. You need to apply pressure to stop the bleeding. After some time the blood will <strong>clot <\/strong>(harden). At the hospital, the doctor will give the person <strong>stitches <\/strong>(close the cut with a thread or sutures) and if the person has lost a lot of blood, they might need a <strong>blood transfusion <\/strong>(transfer of donated blood into their body).<\/p>\n<p>When a person gets a piece of food caught in their throat and can\u2019t breathe, you can say \u201cHe\u2019s\/She\u2019s <strong>choking!\u201d<\/strong> The procedure to force an obstacle out of a person\u2019s airway is called the <strong>Heimlich maneuver. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When someone loses consciousness, you can say \u201cHe\/she <strong>fainted<\/strong>\u201d or \u201cHe\/she <strong>passed out.<\/strong>\u201d If the person lost consciousness due to an impact to the head, you can say \u201cHe\/she <strong>was knocked out.<\/strong>\u201d Before a person faints, they might say \u201cI feel <strong>dizzy\u201d <\/strong>(like the world is spinning) or \u201cI feel <strong>light-headed.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-16907\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/dizzy-spinning-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/dizzy-spinning-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/dizzy-spinning.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If someone appears to be in pain, you can ask him or her <strong>\u201cAre you feeling all right?\u201d<\/strong> or <strong>\u201cWhere does it hurt?\u201d<\/strong> to get more specific details. If someone appears to have a head, neck, or back injury, you should tell them <strong>\u201cDon\u2019t try to move.\u201d<\/strong> You can also say things to calm and comfort the person, like <strong>\u201cHelp is on the way\u201d<\/strong> or <strong>\u201cIt\u2019ll be OK. I\u2019ll stay right here with you.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If necessary, you can ask someone to <strong>call 911 <\/strong>or <strong>call an ambulance <\/strong>in order to get emergency medical help. You can also say\u00a0<strong>\u201cWhere\u2019s the nearest hospital?\u201d <\/strong>if you plan to take the person there yourself.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-16910\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/ambulance-1501264_640-300x169.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/ambulance-1501264_640-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/ambulance-1501264_640.png 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Another serious situation is having a <strong>heart attack, <\/strong>when blood stops flowing to part of the heart and damages it. Someone who is having a heart attack might say <strong>\u201cMy chest hurts.\u201d <\/strong>Another possible problem is if someone says <strong>\u201cMy heart is racing\u201d <\/strong>\u2013 this means it is beating much faster than normal.<\/p>\n<p>If someone is having problems speaking and can\u2019t move or feel one side of their body, you can say <strong>\u201cI think he\/she is having a stroke\u201d<\/strong> \u2013 that\u2019s when poor blood flow damages the brain.<\/p>\n<p>When someone\u2019s heart stops, you can say <strong>\u201cHe\/she has no pulse\u201d<\/strong> (meaning their heart isn\u2019t beating, so blood isn\u2019t flowing). This situation needs immediate action, so you can say <strong>\u201cDoes anyone know CPR?\u201d<\/strong> \u2013 CPR stands for cardiopulmonary resuscitation. You press repeatedly on the person\u2019s chest to manually keep the blood flowing until the person\u2019s heart can be shocked back into normal rhythm using a machine called a\u00a0<strong>defibrillator.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-16909\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/cardiac-1294341_640-300x262.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"262\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/cardiac-1294341_640-300x262.png 300w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/cardiac-1294341_640-70x60.png 70w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/cardiac-1294341_640.png 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When someone is struggling to swim and might be in danger, you can say <strong>\u201cHe\/she\u2019s drowning!\u201d<\/strong> You should immediately call the <strong>lifeguard<\/strong>, if one is available.<\/p>\n<p>When a pregnant woman is about to have her baby, she might say <strong>\u201cMy water broke\u201d <\/strong>meaning the membrane holding the fluid around the baby has broken. This means she is about to <strong>go into labor <\/strong>(start the process of the baby coming out). She might also be <strong>having contractions <\/strong>(feeling painful tension in her uterus).<\/p>\n<p>Here are some phrases to use if someone is a victim of a violent attack:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>He was <strong>shot\u00a0<\/strong>(with a gun).<\/li>\n<li>He was <strong>stabbed\u00a0<\/strong>(with a knife).<\/li>\n<li>He was <strong>hit by a car. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>He was <strong>beaten up. <\/strong>(physically attacked with punches and kicks)<\/li>\n<li>He was <strong>bitten by a dog\/snake.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you are in a building and you think there might be a fire, you can ask others, <strong>\u201cDo you smell something burning?\u201d<\/strong> or say <strong>\u201cI smell smoke.\u201d <\/strong>If the building is on fire, the <strong>smoke detector <\/strong>should notice and the fire alarm will alert everyone. Hopefully everybody leaves and no one gets <strong>trapped in the building <\/strong>(unable to leave because of the fire). The smoke is actually a bigger danger to health than the\u00a0<strong>flames\u00a0<\/strong>(the orange part of the fire).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-16908\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/fire-8837_640-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/fire-8837_640-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/fire-8837_640.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Another serious situation is if there\u2019s a <strong>gas leak. <\/strong>If you smell gas, you might tell people, <strong>\u201cEverybody out! There\u2019s a gas leak, we need to evacuate the building.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After a storm or strong winds, <strong>live power lines<\/strong> (meaning electricity is running through them) might get knocked down.
