Some of these phrasal verbs have multiple meanings!<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>BREAK IN \/ INTO<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-16747\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/burglar.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"208\" height=\"300\" \/>When someone enters a house\/building illegally (often using force, in order to steal something) we say they are &#8220;breaking in&#8221; or &#8220;breaking into + (the place)&#8221;:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Having an alarm system discourages people from\u00a0<strong>breaking in.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Someone <strong>broke into<\/strong> the museum and stole the painting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We can use the noun form, &#8220;break-in,&#8221; to talk about the event in which someone illegally enters a house\/building: &#8220;Ever since the\u00a0<strong>break-in\u00a0<\/strong>last month, I&#8217;ve been afraid to spend the night home alone.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>We also use the phrasal verb &#8220;break in&#8221; when talking about using something new in order to make it more comfortable or familiar to use. For example, when you buy new shoes, the first few days you wear them, you are &#8220;breaking them in&#8221; &#8211; making the shoes adapt to your feet, and getting used to wearing them.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>BREAK OUT<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>We can use this phrasal verb when skin problems appear &#8211; especially a rash or pimples (small bumps).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>After he touched the poisonous plant, a rash <strong>broke out<\/strong> all over his arms.<\/li>\n<li>My teenage daughter doesn&#8217;t want to take any pictures because she&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>breaking out.\u00a0<\/strong>(= she has pimples on her face)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-16750\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/acne-1606765_640-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/acne-1606765_640-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/acne-1606765_640.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We can use the noun form, &#8220;breakout,&#8221; to describe an instance of skin problems: &#8220;This cream will help clear up\u00a0<strong>breakouts\u00a0<\/strong>within 24 hours.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Break out&#8221; can also be used when prisoners forcefully escape from a prison:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Five criminals managed to\u00a0<strong>break out,\u00a0<\/strong>but they were quickly caught by the police.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Informally, we also use &#8220;break out&#8221; to refer to making something ready and available to use:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We won the championship!
