But did you know that there are several different meanings for this word in English? Let&#8217;s learn 30 words and expressions with the word &#8220;party&#8221;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>1) party = celebration<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The verbs we use for organizing a party are\u00a0<strong>have a party\u00a0<\/strong>and, more informally,\u00a0<strong>throw a party\u00a0<\/strong>(don&#8217;t say &#8220;do a party&#8221; or &#8220;make a party&#8221;). The people who come to a party are called\u00a0<strong>guests,\u00a0<\/strong>and the person\/people organizing the party are called the\u00a0<strong>hosts.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The hosts need to\u00a0<strong>invite\u00a0<\/strong>the guests to the party (ask them to come) and the guests should\u00a0<strong>RSVP\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; inform the hosts whether or not they will attend. Although you can say &#8220;attend a party,&#8221; it&#8217;s far more common and casual to say\u00a0<strong>go to a party.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When referring to presence at the party, always use\u00a0<strong>at<\/strong>\u00a0(not &#8220;in&#8221;):<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>I was\u00a0<strong>at the party<\/strong>\u00a0last night;<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>they will be\u00a0<strong>at the party\u00a0<\/strong>on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>A few different types of parties include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a\u00a0<strong>birthday party\u00a0<\/strong>to celebrate someone turning another year older<\/li>\n<li>a\u00a0<strong>farewell party\u00a0<\/strong>to say &#8220;goodbye&#8221; to someone who is leaving the area permanently or for a long time<\/li>\n<li>a\u00a0<strong>housewarming party\u00a0<\/strong>to congratulate the owners of a new home or apartment<\/li>\n<li>a\u00a0<strong>surprise party\u00a0<\/strong>is one where the main person being honored\/celebrated does not know in advance that a party is being organized<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When there&#8217;s a lot of activity at a party, you can say the\u00a0<strong>party is in full swing.\u00a0<\/strong>Sometimes it turns into\u00a0<strong>a wild party,\u00a0<\/strong>meaning one where people are acting crazy and may be out of control.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Party\u00a0<\/strong>can also be a verb &#8211; for example, you can say &#8220;We&#8217;re going to\u00a0<strong>party\u00a0<\/strong>this weekend&#8221; or &#8220;My neighbors\u00a0<strong>partied\u00a0<\/strong>all night.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/courses.espressoenglish.net\/shaynas-40th-birthday-sale\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-24026\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/40th-birthdaysale-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"502\" height=\"282\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/40th-birthdaysale-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/40th-birthdaysale-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/40th-birthdaysale-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/40th-birthdaysale.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 502px) 100vw, 502px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>2) party = a political group with a certain set of beliefs<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>You might have read in the news about\u00a0<strong>political parties\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; groups of citizens and\/or government members who share a particular perspective or set of beliefs.<\/p>\n<p>Political parties vary from country to country, but you might have a more\u00a0<strong>conservative party\u00a0<\/strong>(which believes in tradition and keeping things the same) and a more\u00a0<strong>liberal\/progressive party\u00a0<\/strong>(which wants to bring about social change and evolution).<\/p>\n<p>There might also be a\u00a0<strong>green party,\u00a0<\/strong>which focuses on environmental issues, and a\u00a0<strong>workers&#8217; party,\u00a0<\/strong>which focuses on supporting the common people\/workers. Sometimes these two expressions are combined: for example, a &#8220;search and rescue party&#8221; to help find and save people after an earthquake<\/li>\n<li><strong>a party of&#8230; (number)<\/strong> = when you make a reservation for a restaurant, you can say, for example, &#8220;I&#8217;d like to make a reservation for a party of four&#8221; &#8211; meaning that a group of four people will be eating together.
