Sometimes the meaning of the phrasal verb is quite different from the meaning of the regular verb by itself!<\/p>\n<p>I often see students make mistakes by mixing up regular verbs and phrasal verbs. Here are some common verbs and phrasal verbs in English, and the situations in which each one should be used:<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>grow vs. grow up<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The verb\u00a0<strong>grow\u00a0<\/strong>is used when things increase in size and development:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The country&#8217;s economy is\u00a0<strong>growing.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Many different kinds of flowers\u00a0<strong>grow\u00a0<\/strong>in my garden.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The phrasal verb\u00a0<strong>grow up\u00a0<\/strong>is used\u00a0<em>specifically\u00a0<\/em>for children becoming older and more mature:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>My 5-year-old son wants to be a firefighter when he\u00a0<strong>grows up.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>I&#8217;m very thankful that I\u00a0<strong>grew up\u00a0<\/strong>in a loving family.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you say an adult &#8220;needs to grow up,&#8221; it means he\/she is acting immature (like a child) and should act more mature, like an adult.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-14630\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Family-With-Child-In-The-Middle-Silhouette-300px.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"197\" height=\"215\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>find vs. find out<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The verb\u00a0<strong>find\u00a0<\/strong>is used when you locate an object or person. It can be by accident or on purpose. &#8220;Find&#8221; is usually followed by a noun:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>After searching for an hour, I\u00a0<strong>found\u00a0<\/strong>my keys under the bed.<\/li>\n<li>Today&#8217;s my lucky day! I\u00a0<strong>found\u00a0<\/strong>a dollar on the sidewalk.<\/li>\n<li>I&#8217;m trying to\u00a0<strong>find\u00a0<\/strong>Barbara &#8211; have you seen her anywhere?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The phrasal verb\u00a0<strong>find out\u00a0<\/strong>is used specifically for discovering\u00a0<em>information.\u00a0<\/em>Again, it can be by accident or on purpose. &#8220;Find out&#8221; is usually followed by a subject\/verb or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/question-words-100-example-questions\/\">question word:<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Don&#8217;t let your husband <strong>find out<\/strong> that we&#8217;re planning a surprise party for him.<\/li>\n<li>I finally\u00a0<strong>found out\u00a0<\/strong>why the TV remote wasn&#8217;t working &#8211; the batteries were dead.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>break vs. break down<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-14631\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/oldbottle-broken-300px-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/oldbottle-broken-300px-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/oldbottle-broken-300px.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>If something\u00a0<strong>breaks,\u00a0<\/strong>it means it separates into two or more pieces:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If the wine glass falls off the table, it will\u00a0<strong>break.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>He\u00a0<strong>broke\u00a0<\/strong>his leg in the car accident.<br \/>\n<em>In this case it refers to breaking the bone in his leg<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The phrasal verb\u00a0<strong>break down\u00a0<\/strong>is used specifically for when a car or another machine stops functioning:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>My car\u00a0<strong>broke down\u00a0<\/strong>on the highway, and I had to call for help.<\/li>\n<li>A poorly-maintained machine is more likely to\u00a0<strong>break down.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You might also hear someone say that a person &#8220;broke down&#8221; &#8211; this means the person suddenly became very emotionally upset.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>give vs. give away<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The verb\u00a0<strong>give\u00a0<\/strong>refers to transferring something to someone else:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Jen missed class yesterday &#8211; I&#8217;ll\u00a0<strong>give\u00a0<\/strong>her my notes so she can study.<\/li>\n<li>My best friend\u00a0<strong>gave\u00a0<\/strong>me a pair of headphones for my birthday.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The phrasal verb\u00a0<strong>give away\u00a0<\/strong>means to give for free something that would probably cost money in a normal situation:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When I bought a new computer, I\u00a0<strong>gave away\u00a0<\/strong>the old one.<br \/>\n<em>= I gave it to someone for free instead of selling it<\/em><\/li>\n<li>The radio station is\u00a0<strong>giving away\u00a0<\/strong>two tickets to the rock concert.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>use vs. use up<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>If you <b>use\u00a0<\/b>something, it means you utilize it, you do an activity with it:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You should\u00a0<strong>use\u00a0<\/strong>a sharp knife to cut those vegetables.<\/li>\n<li>I\u00a0<strong>used\u00a0<\/strong>a lot of sugar to make this cake.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The phrasal verb\u00a0<strong>use up\u00a0<\/strong>means to consume something completely (so that nothing remains):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I\u00a0<strong>used up\u00a0<\/strong>my cell phone battery and now I need to recharge it.<\/li>\n<li>Let&#8217;s make spaghetti so we can\u00a0<strong>use up\u00a0<\/strong>this leftover tomato sauce.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14632\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14632\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-14632\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/basic-1238895_640-300x221.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"221\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/basic-1238895_640-300x221.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/basic-1238895_640.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14632\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hey, who used up all the toilet paper?!?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>drop vs. drop by<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>If you\u00a0<strong>drop\u00a0<\/strong>something, it means you let it fall down from your hand:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Oops &#8211; I\u00a0<strong>dropped\u00a0<\/strong>my fork on the floor.<\/li>\n<li>Please don&#8217;t\u00a0<strong>drop\u00a0<\/strong>those boxes; their contents are fragile.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The phrasal verb\u00a0<strong>drop by\u00a0<\/strong>has a totally different definition &#8211; it means to visit a place quickly and informally:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>My friend is sick. I think I&#8217;ll\u00a0<strong>drop by\u00a0<\/strong>and see how she&#8217;s doing.<br \/>\n<em>= visit her house quickly<\/em><\/li>\n<li>I&#8217;ve just moved into a new apartment.
