Slang is very informal, and is usually used in humor, music, and conversations between close friends.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Formal:<\/strong>\u00a0Official business, legal, academic English<\/li>\n<li><strong>Casual:<\/strong>\u00a0Idioms, everyday conversation, e-mails<\/li>\n<li><strong>Informal:<\/strong>\u00a0Slang, humor, music<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Slang is almost never used in business English, but idioms are often used in conversations and e-mails &#8211; so I&#8217;m going to introduce you to some common idiomatic expressions.<\/p>\n<p>This is the method we&#8217;ll use for learning the idioms:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Look at the example of the idiom in context<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Guess the meaning of the idiom<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Wait for the answer and explanation<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Why do I recommend these three steps? Well, it&#8217;s important to try to figure out the meanings of the idioms from the context. This helps you think actively about the expressions and learn to understand new expressions faster.<\/p>\n<p>Ready? Let&#8217;s begin! <em>(write your answers on a piece of paper, and then scroll down to the end of the lesson to see the answers and explanations)<\/em><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Idiom 1:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>&#8220;We showed the president 20 ideas for new products, but she didn&#8217;t like any of them &#8211; so we had to\u00a0<strong><u>go back to the drawing board.<\/u><\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">a) ask other people for advice<br \/>\nb) start again from the beginning<br \/>\nc) reuse a good idea from the past<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Idiom 2:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>&#8220;Our sales estimates were\u00a0<strong><u>way off the mark<\/u><\/strong>. We&#8217;d projected sales of $15M, but the actual numbers were closer to $9M.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">a) too optimistic<br \/>\nb) higher than average<br \/>\nc) very wrong\/inaccurate<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Idiom 3:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>&#8220;The text for the article is almost perfect. I just want to\u00a0<strong><u>tweak<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0one or two sentences.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">a) remove<br \/>\nb) make small adjustments<br \/>\nc) make longer<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Idiom 4:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>&#8220;I need to submit a weekly report on this project, so please keep me<strong><u>\u00a0in the loop.<\/u><\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">a) informed \/ updated<br \/>\nb) working hard<br \/>\nc) in the office<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Idiom 5:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>&#8220;Three people from my department are on vacation, so\u00a0<strong><u>I&#8217;ve got a lot on my plate<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0at the moment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">a) I have a lot of responsibilities<br \/>\nb) I wish I was on vacation, too<br \/>\nc) I have nothing to do<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Idiom 6:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>&#8220;The\u00a0<strong><u>rule of thumb<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0is to reinvest no more than 30%, but it&#8217;s OK if you go over that number occasionally.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">a) minimum amount<br \/>\nb) strict limit<br \/>\nc) general practice<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Idiom 7:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>&#8220;Bob said I missed the deadline, but I want to <strong><u>set the record straight<\/u><\/strong> \u2013 I submitted my work on time, but he didn\u2019t check his e-mail.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">a) correct a mistake and say the truth<br \/>\nb) express a different opinion<br \/>\nc) get permission<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Idiom 8:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>&#8220;We have until December to prepare these documents, so let&#8217;s\u00a0<strong><u>put them on the back\u00a0burner<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0for now. We have other, more urgent projects.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">a) send them back to their origin<br \/>\nb) give them low priority<br \/>\nc) finish them quickly<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Idiom 9:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>&#8220;That program never produced any significant results, so the director finally decided to\u00a0<strong><u>pull the plug.<\/u><\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">a) get personally involved<br \/>\nb) improve the technology<br \/>\nc) stop, discontinue<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Idiom 10:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>&#8220;Yesterday&#8217;s meeting lasted four hours&#8230; but\u00a0<strong><u>in a nutshell<\/u><\/strong>, we decided to close our office in India and open a branch in China.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">a) in an argument<br \/>\nb) in the end<br \/>\nc) in summary<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Idiom 11:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>&#8220;Laura didn\u2019t go to the meeting. Could you send her a summary of the discussion to <strong><u>bring her<\/u><\/strong><u> <strong>up to speed<\/strong><\/u><strong>?<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">a) help her work faster<br \/>\nb) give her the most recent information<br \/>\nc) find out what her perspective is<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Idiom 12:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>&#8220;Don\u2019t make any changes without talking to Peter. He\u2019s the one <strong><u>calling the shots<\/u><\/strong> on this project.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">a) communicating with the supervisor<br \/>\nb) making the important decisions<br \/>\nc) working very hard<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Answers and Explanations<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<h4>1. go back to the drawing board<\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">b) start again from the beginning<\/p>\n<p>Designers and engineers often draw a picture of a product as the first step in its development. So &#8220;going back to the drawing board&#8221; means to start again at step 1 of a process.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>2. way off the mark<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">c) very wrong\/inaccurate<\/p>\n<p>This idiom comes from the sport of archery, where arrows that do not hit the target are said to be &#8220;off the mark.&#8221; The word &#8220;way&#8221; means &#8220;very&#8221; &#8211; so &#8220;way off the mark&#8221; means &#8220;very inaccurate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>3. tweak<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">b) make small adjustments<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know the origin of this word, but it can be used as either a noun or a verb &#8211; you can say &#8220;I want to tweak one or two things&#8221; or &#8220;I want to make a few tweaks&#8221; to talk about minor adjustments.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>4. in the loop<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">a) informed \/ updated<\/p>\n<p>You can also say the opposite &#8211; &#8220;out of the loop&#8221; &#8211; if you are not being informed or updated about a project or news.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>5. I&#8217;ve got a lot on my plate<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">a) I have a lot of responsibilities<\/p>\n<p>If you go to a buffet and you put a lot of food on your plate, then you are obligated to eat it all. So having &#8220;a lot on your plate&#8221; means you have many tasks or responsibilities.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>6. rule of thumb<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">c) general practice<\/p>\n<p>A &#8220;rule of thumb&#8221; is a general rule or general practice that may have exceptions in some situations. This is your &#8220;thumb&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-14242\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/thumb-300x273.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"173\" height=\"157\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/thumb-300x273.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/thumb.jpg 372w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 173px) 100vw, 173px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you use your thumb to measure something, you can get a general idea, but the measurement will not be perfectly accurate. So a general rule with exceptions permitted is called a &#8220;rule of thumb.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>7. set the record straight<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">a) correct a mistake and say the truth<\/p>\n<p>When there is a misunderstanding or something was falsely reported, you should \u201cset the record straight\u201d \u2013 say what is true, so that people have the correct understanding of the situation.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>8. put something on the back burner<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">b) give it low priority<\/p>\n<p>This idiom comes from cooking. This picture shows a stove with four burners:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-14243\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/burner.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"392\" height=\"261\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/burner.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/burner-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 392px) 100vw, 392px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you are cooking multiple things at the same time, you put the less important items, which don&#8217;t need your attention, on the back burner &#8211; and you put the items on which you are actively working on the front burner. So to &#8220;put something on the back burner&#8221; is to temporarily give it low priority and less attention.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>9. pull the plug<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">c) stop, discontinue<\/p>\n<p>If you pull (remove) the plug of your television from the source of electricity, the television will stop working. So to &#8220;pull the plug&#8221; on a project or program means to discontinue it.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>10. in a nutshell<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">c) in summary<\/p>\n<p>When you summarize a lot of information in a short phrase or explanation, you can begin the statement with &#8220;in a nutshell.&#8221; This picture shows nuts:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-14244\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/nuts.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"358\" height=\"238\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/nuts.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/nuts-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 358px) 100vw, 358px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;shell&#8221; is the hard exterior of the nut. A nutshell is very small &#8211; so when you put a lot of information into a small number of words, you can say &#8220;in a nutshell&#8221; to express the fact that you are giving a summary.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>11. bring her up to speed<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">b) give her the most recent information<\/p>\n<p>If someone is &#8220;up to speed,&#8221; it means they are fully informed about the latest information.
