These are phrases native English speakers use without thinking \u2014 and they\u2019ll help your English sound more natural, friendly, and fluent.<\/p>\n<p>So grab a coffee \u2615 and let\u2019s look at how English is really spoken in my everyday life!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/espressoenglish.lpages.co\/free-pdf-10-causal-conversational-phrases\/\">Download the lesson guide<\/a> to try the quiz and test yourself on these phrases.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">1. &#8220;Can we just drop it?&#8221;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>My friend and I were debating\u00a0an issue we had different opinions on. The issue wasn&#8217;t really that important, and I didn&#8217;t want to spend the whole time talking about that topic, so I said, &#8220;Can we just drop it?&#8221;\u00a0To &#8220;drop&#8221; a topic of conversation means to <strong>stop talking about it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">2. &#8220;That&#8217;s beside the point.&#8221;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>I was discussing politics with my dad, and he mentioned something that wasn&#8217;t related to the main topic, so I commented &#8220;That&#8217;s beside the point.&#8221; This expression means that something is <strong>not relevant or not important.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">3. &#8220;I just want to give you a heads up.&#8221;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>I referred a student to another English teacher friend of mine, and I contacted the teacher and said &#8220;I just want to give you a heads up that one of my students might get in touch with you.&#8221; To &#8220;give (someone) a heads up&#8221; means to <strong>give them an alert.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">4. &#8220;That class is\u00a0not for the faint of heart.&#8221;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In a conversation about different types of fitness classes available at my gym, I saw one that&#8217;s especially intense and said &#8220;That class is not for the faint of heart.&#8221; If something is &#8220;not for the faint of heart,&#8221; it means it&#8217;s <strong>not good\/appropriate for people who are disturbed by unpleasantness<\/strong> or challenge. You need to have courage and strength in order to endure it.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">5. &#8220;They make you jump through a lot of hoops.&#8221;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>I was describing a long and complicated bureaucratic process, and remarked that &#8220;They make you jump through a lot of hoops&#8221; &#8211; to &#8220;jump through hoops&#8221; means having to <strong>do a lot of ridiculously difficult\/complicated things in order to achieve your goal.<\/strong> This expression is often used when a process is unnecessarily complicated.<\/p>\n<div class=\"alert\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/espressoenglish.lpages.co\/free-pdf-10-causal-conversational-phrases\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-24788\" src=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/conversational-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/conversational-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/conversational-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/conversational-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/www.espressoenglish.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/conversational.png 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a class=\"elementor-button rounded large blue\" href=\"https:\/\/espressoenglish.lpages.co\/free-pdf-10-causal-conversational-phrases\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Download lesson PDF<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">6. &#8220;You need to stand your ground.&#8221;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>My friend was in a difficult situation where her family\u00a0wanted her to do something, but she didn&#8217;t want to. Her family continued to\u00a0pressure\u00a0her, and she wasn&#8217;t sure whether to give in just to please them. I told her, &#8220;You need to stand your ground.&#8221; To &#8220;stand your ground&#8221; means to <strong>stay firm and strong in your beliefs and actions,<\/strong> and resist attempts to make you change your position.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">7. &#8220;You&#8217;re in for a treat.&#8221;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>We were going to eat\u00a0a particular food that my husband had never tried before, and I told him, &#8220;You&#8217;re in for a treat.&#8221; <strong>A &#8220;treat&#8221; is something special<\/strong> (it&#8217;s not part of your normal routine; you only have it occasionally) that is good and enjoyable. The expression &#8220;You&#8217;re in for&#8230;&#8221; is an informal way to say\u00a0&#8220;You&#8217;re guaranteed to have&#8230;&#8221; or <strong>&#8220;You&#8217;re going to have&#8230;&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">8. &#8220;A lot of other\u00a0companies are following suit.&#8221;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>I was talking about a website that started\u00a0free shipping on its products, and said that &#8220;a lot of other companies are following suit&#8221; &#8211; to &#8220;follow suit&#8221; means to follow someone else&#8217;s example, to imitate; to do the same thing as someone else.
