There are two levels of the course, and you&#8217;ll learn hundreds of real English phrases that are useful for daily life.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>#1 &#8211; cover a lot of ground<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>If a class or a course\u00a0<strong>covers a lot of ground,\u00a0<\/strong>it means it teaches a lot of material.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;We<strong> covered a lot of ground<\/strong> in the first two weeks of the course &#8211; we&#8217;ve already finished four chapters in the textbook!&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">What&#8217;s a\u00a0class or course you&#8217;ve taken that has covered a lot of ground?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>#2 &#8211; draw a blank \/ mind went blank<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>If you are asked a question and you\u00a0<strong>draw a blank\u00a0<\/strong>or your\u00a0<strong>mind goes blank,\u00a0<\/strong>it means you cannot think of the answer. Maybe you actually do know the answer or have a response, but you just can&#8217;t think of it in that moment.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I totally\u00a0<strong>drew a blank\u00a0<\/strong>when it came to the final question on the exam.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Talk about a time your mind went blank when faced with a question.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>#3 &#8211; on campus<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The word\u00a0<strong>campus\u00a0<\/strong>refers to the property of a college, university, or school.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;There are three dining halls and two gyms\u00a0<strong>on campus.<\/strong>&#8220;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Say a few things that were on the campus of your school or university.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>#4 &#8211; teacher&#8217;s pet<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>teacher&#8217;s pet\u00a0<\/strong>is the teacher&#8217;s favorite student, who always behaves well, studies hard, and tries to please the teacher.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Mark always helps clean up the classroom; he&#8217;s a\u00a0<strong>teacher&#8217;s pet.<\/strong>&#8220;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Who in your class was a teacher&#8217;s pet?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>#5 &#8211; know by heart<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>If you\u00a0<strong>know something by heart,\u00a0<\/strong>it means you have memorized it. You can remember it easily without having to check a reference.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;We studied that poem so much that now I\u00a0<strong>know it by heart<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>What is something that you know by heart?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>#6 &#8211; goof off \/ goof around<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>If students are\u00a0<strong>goofing off\u00a0<\/strong>or <b>goofing around,<\/b> it means they are acting silly and not being serious.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The teacher scolded the boys who were\u00a0<strong>goofing off\u00a0<\/strong>in the back of the classroom.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Talk about a time you were goofing off, or you saw someone else goofing off.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>#7 &#8211; drop out of school<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>To\u00a0<strong>drop out of school\u00a0<\/strong>means to stop attending school permanently. (If you just take a break but intend to go back, then you are &#8220;taking a semester off&#8221; or &#8220;taking a year off&#8221;). A person who does this can be called a\u00a0<strong>high school dropout\u00a0<\/strong>or a\u00a0<strong>college dropout<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;She had to\u00a0<strong>drop out\u00a0<\/strong>because of some serious health problems.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>What are some reasons a person might drop out of school? Do you ever think it&#8217;s better for someone to drop out?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Common Error in English: &#8220;I&#8217;m graduated&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>A lot of English learners, when talking about what they studied in college, say:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>&#8220;I&#8217;m graduated in sociology.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>However, that&#8217;s not the way native English speakers express this idea.
